The first part of the book goes into too much detail about how the author gathered his information which would be good for a student, but I was interested in the songs and stories. Once I got to that part it was great. The young people leave the area to find work so it is important to capture this culture while it remains. Great literature! The region of northern NM & southern CO known as the San Luis valley is a Spanish culture, not Mexican. The Spanish spoken by the elderly people is 16th century Costillan. So is the culture, religion, festivals, etc. It is a time capsule to be treasured.

Valuable, time-consuming work and I am sure much appreciated by native N.M families. My family is from N.M. and most of the inhabitants from the small town bordering N.M. that I was born in, are also from N.M.
Interesting to know where the language, long instilled habits and beliefs began. I know my 87 yr young mother will experience a few a-h-h-a-a-a!! moments as she goes through the book.
