Childhood friends and love-interests, Leslie and Justin, were torn apart by circumstances beyond their control. When Justin left their small hometown, he left behind a girl who loved him fully. When bookstore owner, Leslie, is confronted by the return of the successful author, Justin, she erects another foot on the cement wall she has built around her heart.
Follow Your Arrow is a very angsty read; Leslie hides from her problems and feelings, and Justin’s excuses for staying away are weak. Ms. Willard’s main characters are interesting, but the two secondary characters are incredible. Justin and Leslie are encouraged to explore their loves and losses by their good friends, Haddie and Elliot; these two deserve a story of their own!
While the second-chance romance was good, it would have been great if the mystery aspect had been further explored throughout the story. To some degree, I felt the mystery was added in merely to create a conflict for the story’s zenith. None-the-less, Follow Your Arrow is a lovely romance with a message of following your heart and your destiny. How could a book lover not love a romance involving an author and a bookstore owner?
For Justin and Leslie's story, it was needed. Their story is one of coming home, forgiveness, second chance, and rekindled love. And that's just the forefront. Behind all of this is the persistence of good friends and delving into a past that might be best forgotten but is in desperate need of airing.
My admiration, a huge lot of it, rests on Justin. While I found his reason for staying away a bit questionable, I found his pursuit of Leslie incredible. He was relentless. He was insistent. He was determined. It wasn't hard to see that his feelings for Leslie hadn't changed; she'd been a constant presence in his life as evidenced by his writing of her in every story he penned. A little of the woman he loved and left behind was birthed into the women of each story, an everlasting testimony of his feelings for her.
Leslie had loved and lost, more times than should be possible, I feel. The bitterness of loss and failure is heavy on her tongue when she learns that Justin's returning to their tiny island, and she fortifies the wall she's built around her heart with stubbornness that was irritating and, sometimes, aggravating. But it wasn't to be denied or ignored. As much as it drove me slightly batty, I understood it. She would not have been a female lead I would feel anything for if this layer of complexity were absent. It made liking her difficult, yes, but it made the fight for her heart so much more real.
I read fiction to escape real life. It's what leisure reading has always been for me. But every now and then (this makes twice this year so far) there comes along a story that was meant to be written because someone out there can relate. Knows that it is to have loved and lost; to have never moved on from the one who got away; to seek forgiveness and/or to offer it; to accept and step into the second chance that's been given. Real life as fiction.
Ms. Willard has penned a story that is so much more than a second chance. It is, in many instances, one of redemption. Without it, Justin and Leslie's second chance would not have happened. If you choose to read this story, and I sincerely hope you do, I urge you to settle in and prepare to be lost in a world of emotions. There is no shortage of that in this story, whether it is the characters' or your own. And a story that is this evocative and moving is a story that is worth reading and sharing.

This is the story of Leslie and Justin. Leslie is a divorced book store owner who has told herself she is satisfied with the routine and lonely life she leads. She believes that if she doesn't let anyone in besides her few friends then she can't let anyone else hurt her. Then Justin comes back into town, her teenage lover now best selling author. His agent sent him back to the home he left for inspiration to finish his mystery series that is set in his hometown. The minute they see each other old feelings are brought up. Justin still loves Leslie. His books even were inspired and portray part of her. Leslie wants to hold onto to the hurt and hate she thinks she feels towards him for breaking her heart years before. But as she tries to avoid him and he pursues her, they find out they have their own mysteries in each others lives to solve.
This was a fun read. What I really enjoyed was that the author started the story right away. There wasn't any long build up to set the scene. She threw the reader right into it. The story starts off with Justin coming home in hours and Leslie not being happy about it. From there the store builds and we quickly learn the history of the two characters and why the feel the way they do. This story has all the things I love in a story: strong characters, humor, romance, swoon worthy scenes, surprises and even some mystery. I highly recommend this book to all romance and fans of just a good story. I really hope there is more to come from this author with this story. Read the book. You'll feel the same way.
