Do you follow Jesus? Dr. Webb asks all American Christians this question, reminding them what Jesus taught in the Sermon on the Mount, through parables, healings, and other teachings. With a balance between biblical teaching and political and social commentary, she shows the reader that both perspectives are necessary to make practical and wise decisions as believers. Her seminary training at an evangelical seminary and her professional training in marriage and family counseling/addiction intervention, uniquely qualify her to ask this question in today's political climate. With a background in conflict resolution she hopes by her dialogue at the beginning and conclusion of this book to encourage Christians to talk with and listen to each other.

This short book will force the reader to reflect on what is required if Jesus is to be taken seriously in this age of excesses of political power, deception in government, and unchecked accumulations of wealth. It will disturb you, especially if you support the present administration in Washington.

Given his gross lack of qualifications to serve as U.S. President, his moral turpitude and his racist and anti-female attitudes and mean beliefs, Donald Trump should be kicked out of office, there should be marching in the streets as in Hong Kong for the same repressive reasons, and, like the governor of Puerto Rico, he should be banished from politics for the rest of his miserable life. None of that seems to be happening, so the next best thing is Dr. Webb's gentle but powerful little book. Every member of Trump's base needs to read Following Jesus, and our young change agents need to take this book to heart, just as they have with gun violence and climate change.
Immediately, Dr. Webb tells you exactly where she stands, with the Apostles' Creed and "the forgiveness of sins." Her Dedication sums it up: "To my Christian brothers and sisters willing to agree to disagree while loving each other and following Jesus." While nearly 4 out of 5 wayward Christians voted for this monster, their sins are forgiven as long as they repent.
Perhaps the most powerful part of this fine book follows: a simulated dialogue between MT (Mary Theresa) and CV, the Collective Voice of those wayward Christians who still support the meanest American head of state ever. The heart of the book is a detailed study of a good Christian's "compass," the Eight Beatitudes, reflecting her doctorate in theology. I think her sweep through church history is one of the clearest and most concise I've ever read. And I have to disagree with the first two reviewers who disliked the "political" stances, found in her closing chapters. Her list of saints is impressive: Francis of Assisi, Mother Teresa, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Robert F. Kennedy, George Herbert Walker Bush and John McCain. Contrast Donald J. Trump to any of these. The Epilogue concludes the simulated dialogue between MT and CV. We can only hope our grandchildren will read and appreciate this thought-provoking and stimulating Christian Book of the Year!

Can a person be a good Christian while supporting Donald Trump as president? In "Following Jesus in the Age of Trump," author Dr. Mary Theresa Webb says "No!" This book uses Jesus' teachings, specifically the Beatitudes as taught at the famous Sermon on the Mount, to show that Trump is not worthy of praise by Christians. Webb argues that his actions simply do not align with Christian moral standards.

Through reading this book, I must agree with the author's assertion. Webb skillfully tailors argument after argument showing how Christians have historically given free passes to politicians despite their actions. While I disagree with some of the author's choices of politicians she believes to have been good Christians - politicians who have committed sinful acts during their times in office - her overall message is very important for all Christians to hear.

As Christians, we must follow Jesus. We cannot make any excuses.

I read Following Jesus by Mary Webb expecting it would be like other religious books that is one sided and close minded but found that this book was more informative and allowed the reader to think and reflect. The book starts in the format of a conversation and then goes into a history lesson dating back to Roman times. The historical information continues through the time of Hitler and to the USA when the pilgrims first came to this new world ending with current times. The author related God and Jesus’s place in those times and what we as Christians can and should do in regard to leadership, our daily lives and even the environment.

The book is political in nature and I presents statistics regarding Christians voting for Trump as president noting 81% of Christians voted for Trump in the last election and many still support him. The later part of the book takes a strong stance regarding Trump and his life and presidency. This part I found puzzling as I personally have never voted for a president based on religion or thought about campaign promises that way. I found I disliked all the political and religious comparisons but enjoyed the historical information. The author did do a good job of making information relevant to the reader by mentioning people one could recognize like Princes Diana, Mother Theresa and events like Hitler’s reign in Germany and our current president Trump.

Following Jesus by Dr. Mary Theresa Webb is a call to re-examine our spiritual compass in the context of the current political climate in America. Dr. Webb handles a polarizing topic in our current culture with sensitivity, logic, and reason. Our actions in the community should reflect the example set by Jesus during his life and ministry. People turn a blind eye to the lies and corruption at the highest levels of government in exchange for political favors for the church. Dr. Webb argues that adhering to the way of life taught by Jesus and reclaiming the importance of absolute truth will inevitably put us in conflict with the current culture, but the path of following Jesus is a narrow one.

This book is very captivating and portrays the historical and biblical events of Jesus and his well-known followers very well. Really gets the reader to think about their stance when it comes to following Jesus especially under the current political administration.
