Following Jesus: In the Age of Trumpism Paperback – May 30, 2019
Purchase options and add-ons
Do you follow Jesus? Dr. Webb asks all American Christians this question, reminding them what Jesus taught in the Sermon on the Mount, through parables, healings, and other teachings. With a balance between biblical teaching and political and social commentary, she shows the reader that both perspectives are necessary to make practical and wise decisions as believers. Her seminary training at an evangelical seminary and her professional training in marriage and family counseling/addiction intervention, uniquely qualify her to ask this question in today's political climate. With a background in conflict resolution she hopes by her dialogue at the beginning and conclusion of this book to encourage Christians to talk with and listen to each other.
This short book will force the reader to reflect on what is required if Jesus is to be taken seriously in this age of excesses of political power, deception in government, and unchecked accumulations of wealth. It will disturb you, especially if you support the present administration in Washington.

About the authors

Mary Theresa Webb (www.marytheresawebb.com) has led a distinguished career as an educator, trainer, professional counselor, global leader and author. Following Jesus in the Age of Trump is her most recent book. She holds a master's degree in education from the University of Pittsburgh, A Biblical Studies degree from Trinity School for Ministry and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of America. While living with her husband and family for fifty years in Pittsburgh she wrote Imagine Pittsburgh and founded Conservation Consultants, was nominated for Woman of the Year and the World's Who Who of Women. She also founded GOAL Project (www.goalproject.org), a worldwide recovery and addiction training organization. She is best known for her books on healing and her expertise on Codependence family issues.

When I was a child I loved to read and write stories. I even kept a flashlight hidden under my covers so that I could continue reading after lights out. After majoring in education at the University of Michigan, I taught third grade in Saline, Michigan and, later, sixth grade in Pennsylvania. Since many of the boys in my classes would rather play football or computer games than read this challenge led me to write books geared to hold their interest. Later in my teaching career I wrote educational curriculum modules for social studies and science teachers. Finally, I earned a master's degree in Education focusing on curriculum and supervision.
But that did not end my pursuit for more knowledge: First, about the Bible that led to a degree in biblical studies; then, about people that led to a certificate in pastoral counseling and years of helping others heal; then I responded to a call to go to Russia to help start 12-step support groups that led to twenty years leading mission teams to train others.
AND I KEPT WRITING.

Immediately, Dr. Webb tells you exactly where she stands, with the Apostles' Creed and "the forgiveness of sins." Her Dedication sums it up: "To my Christian brothers and sisters willing to agree to disagree while loving each other and following Jesus." While nearly 4 out of 5 wayward Christians voted for this monster, their sins are forgiven as long as they repent.
Perhaps the most powerful part of this fine book follows: a simulated dialogue between MT (Mary Theresa) and CV, the Collective Voice of those wayward Christians who still support the meanest American head of state ever. The heart of the book is a detailed study of a good Christian's "compass," the Eight Beatitudes, reflecting her doctorate in theology. I think her sweep through church history is one of the clearest and most concise I've ever read. And I have to disagree with the first two reviewers who disliked the "political" stances, found in her closing chapters. Her list of saints is impressive: Francis of Assisi, Mother Teresa, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Robert F. Kennedy, George Herbert Walker Bush and John McCain. Contrast Donald J. Trump to any of these. The Epilogue concludes the simulated dialogue between MT and CV. We can only hope our grandchildren will read and appreciate this thought-provoking and stimulating Christian Book of the Year!
Through reading this book, I must agree with the author's assertion. Webb skillfully tailors argument after argument showing how Christians have historically given free passes to politicians despite their actions. While I disagree with some of the author's choices of politicians she believes to have been good Christians - politicians who have committed sinful acts during their times in office - her overall message is very important for all Christians to hear.
As Christians, we must follow Jesus. We cannot make any excuses.
The book is political in nature and I presents statistics regarding Christians voting for Trump as president noting 81% of Christians voted for Trump in the last election and many still support him. The later part of the book takes a strong stance regarding Trump and his life and presidency. This part I found puzzling as I personally have never voted for a president based on religion or thought about campaign promises that way. I found I disliked all the political and religious comparisons but enjoyed the historical information. The author did do a good job of making information relevant to the reader by mentioning people one could recognize like Princes Diana, Mother Theresa and events like Hitler’s reign in Germany and our current president Trump.
