I was looking for a book that explained food allergies on a preschooler level to read to my daughter's pre-k class. I searched forever for a book that got to the point but did not scare the living daylights out of the children with shots and ambulance rides, etc. This book takes the reader through a day in the life of a child with food allergies. It is witty and explains to the child why they it is important to be a "food detective" to ensure the safety of the product. I found it helpful that it explains why children with food allergies have to have a special snack to be certain it is allergen free. Simply put it got to the point, explained that food allergies could make the person sick, and ended with everyone is unique and children with food allergies are not wierd just that they have to do other things to make sure they stay safe just like everyone else. I highly recommend this book for little ones!

This book could not be better for your food allergy child. I read it to my 3-year-old at least twice a day. It makes food allergies seem like just another part of life...not a huge deal. I LOVE that. I have been looking for a book like this for months and couldn't be more pleased with it.
It doesn't go on and on about how "special" you are b/c you have food allergies. Jack, the boy in the book has them, he deals with them.....he moves on with life. It's perfect!

I really like this book and have come to like it more so as we have read many in this genre now. It is very low-key, told in the voice of a school boy as he goes through his day. It makes the allergies a part of life, rather than the main part, and although it mentions avoiding, getting sick, etc it is done in a casual and relaxed way. My kids like this one as well. This would be a great book to read to a classroom for some education and awareness, probably best in the pre-K/K/1/2 range.

I love this book! I ordered it because my oldest son (also named Jack), has multiple food allergies. I wanted something that I could read to him and his younger brother. I LOVE that this book simultaneously stresses that food allergies need to be taken seriously while also showing that it's not something that needs to rule (and ruin) every aspect of life. Fantastic book! I will be taking this to my son's preschool class to share with his classmates!

I have been looking around for a children's book on allergies and this is one of the best that I have found. The story is kind of set up like "a day in the life of....". It talks about the main character and his allergies. I love that the mention of the ällergies is a "by the way" style instead of making it the centre of attention. The book also talks about his friends who have other allergies. The tone of the book is a very normal tone where it does not make having allergies a big deal or undermine the condition, unlike many other allergies books out there for young children.

This book talks about:
- several different allergies like milk and peanut
- importance of not sharing food
- symptoms of allergic reaction (including anaphylaxis)
- what to do in the event of an allergic reaction
- and many more

I really like how the author address this topic, not undermining it nor making it a big deal, yet the importance of the message is not missed.

From the reviews, I could tell this was a good book...but I was still surprised at just how PERFECT it is for helping explain allergies to little children. My 3-year-old has severe peanut and tree nut allergies (had an anaphylactic reaction to peanut butter the first time he ate it at 14 months--so scary)! We've been talking to him about his allergies, got him an allerbling allergy bracelet, and are always teaching him about his allergies and re-iterating it with him continually. This book thoroughly explains how to safely live with allergies, and also to be sensitive to others' allergies. It also helps kids with allergy to understand that they are not alone, even though we are all different and may have different allergies. We need to be sensitive to one another. I LOVE this book and so does my son!!!

I am so thankful that I found this book. My son has severe food allergies and this book helps not only himself understand more but also his peers. I bought this book for his preschool teacher to read to his class and plan on bringing it to school next year when he starts DK. I highly recommend this book for anyone with young children dealing with food allergies.

I really, really love this book. My almost 3 year old has a severe peanut allergy and I wanted to start reading to her about her allergy to help her understand. There will not always be friends in her life who are caring in regards to her allergy so I need for her to understand the things she can and cannot have. I feel like this book has been a step in the right direction because since we have been reading it she has started to tell me, "Peanuts make me sick."
