NEW Combo BLUWAVS CD and FLAC FILE

Amazon.com

Based on musical transgressions committed by the likes of Jamiroquai--well, okay, only Jamiroquai—-some might say the didgeridoo has no place in rock 'n' roll. An avowed fan of Paul Simon's Graceland, however, Xavier Rudd continues to seek redemption for the much-maligned instrument from his Australian homeland on his sixth full-length release, Food in the Belly, an earthy collection of roots-rock tunes that also sees the one-man-band champion everything from wind chimes and tubas to ankle bells and tablas. On slow-percolating tracks like "Messages" and "Pockets of Peace," the part-time surfer seems to share not only Jack Johnson's laidback delivery style but passive preachiness: "So speak out loud/ Of the things you are proud/ And if you love this coast/ Then keep it clean as it hopes." Fans of Michael Franti and Ben Harper wouldn't go amiss. --Aidin Vaziri

Xavier Rudd has made a very special album here. What a great wintertime release. Using instruments from his native Australia to create some of the more interesting musical arrangements since Ben Harper or say Sufjan Stevens. The use of the didgeridoo he really captures a landscape we rarely experience here in the states. This the best use of the didgeridoo since Ben Harper's 'Both Sides of the Gun'. Xavier's ballads are some of the more touching in recent memory. Any fan of Mason Jennings, Ben Harper, Sufjan Stevens or Iron & Wine will not be disappointed. Best album of the year so far.

This was an impulse purchase; I wanted to sample something a little fresh, something new, and went with Xavier Rudd. The college crowd should be duly impressed with this outing. The rest of us may have to let it sink in over time.

There are some lilting tunes amid random cacophany on this experiment; the better ones soothe the ears. Rudd is not a poet in the ranks with Dylan or Mitchell, but he gets a fair amount of social commentary under the skin.

To be fair, this is something that most younger music fans should take notice of, because at least it takes some dares. I also give credit for Rudd incorporating his self proclaimed mentor Paul Simon. I didn't know he had such admiration until I read some reviews, but I found myself saying " Hmm.... some of this sounds like ' Graceland' era Paul Simon." If you want something that is a touch edgy, a bit melodic and a little profound, pick this up.

Xavier never lets you down! Every song is delicious and makes you want to live a better life. His rhythms and beats can't get me moving when nothing else will. Master of instruments of the soul. I love his music and message

The first couple of times I listened to this CD, I wasn't sure I liked it. The didgeridoo was cool but Xavier's voice was a bit thin and music had a strong Paul Simon sound. But a couple more listens and it has definitely improved. While Xavier doesn't have a strong voice, it is adequate and his use non-standard instruments (like the didgeridoo and sitar) brings a pleasant uniqueness to his music. Keeping it all acoustic also works with his lyrics and voice. Give it a listen a couple of times. It'll grow on you.

A brilliant songwriter/musician. Excellent sound. Outstanding lyrics. Something very subtle (in a positive way, not meant as in boring or staid) and charming about "Food in the Belly" by Xavier Rudd. Loving the song "Messages" have listened multiple times, each time, I slip a bit further into the music.

Heard him on an Australian morning news show and promptly went out and bought the cd. Wasn't disappointed at all. Every song is a winner. The didgeridoo and especially the guitars sound great. Sometimes he sounds very like Paul Simon from the Graceland Album. I could go on but I don't want to bore.

Wonderful new music by Xavier Rudd. Takes me back to a time when music was real and meant something very important and was not simply a pleasing melody. Great tunes.

The first few tracks are great!! Good driving music, very catchy. Later tracks are not as strong or as catchy, and a couple are downright depressing.
His vocals are like Jack Johnson and Paul Simon, nice guitar, and some Ben Harper percussion is thrown in. Most tracks are nicely balanced and very listenable.
