Walnut Tree Facts

Did you know that organic walnuts aren’t really nuts? Like many other plants classified as such (almonds, cashews, pistachios), walnuts are seeds of a drupe fruit. Some people even pickle these fruits while they are still green.

However, the real value of this quirky plant is the nutmeat that we know as organic walnut. It’s one of the healthiest and most delicious nuts that exist on the planet and Food To Live Organic Walnuts would allow you to enjoy all their benefits.

The walnut tree originated from Central Asia, although there were quite a few of them growing in the Southern Europe as well. The seeds of this plant have been revered by our ancestors for millennia. It’s truly fascinating that historians and archeologists are finding proof that people have been eating walnuts for over 7000 years. Even at those ancient times, this food was associated with intelligence due to the shape of the kernel.
They are rich in a variety of essential elements and offer such a great balance of calories-to-nutrients that you can eat them even when working.

Types of Walnuts

There are over 30 types of walnut trees cultivated today. The most popular of them is the English walnut, although technically, it’s more correct to call this species Persian walnut as it originated from India. North America is the place of origin for black and white walnuts, although they aren’t as popular and their commercial cultivation is limited.

Today walnut trees are grown almost everywhere as the plant isn’t particularly demanding. China is the leading producer of walnuts, although the US is quite close, with the majority of American walnuts coming from California.

Every type of walnut that we enjoy eating has very similar benefits. Some of them have a bit more of specific nutrients, but these differences are slim. The main features that set apart walnut species are subtle fluctuations in size, color, and flavor.

Walnut plants are reasonably easy to cultivate. The tree starts producing fruits after only about 4 years of growth and can stay alive for centuries. The fruits mature by the end of August when they crack and turn brown, exposing the hard shell of the kernel.

Walnuts have a great number of uses, although being a delicious food is definitely the leader among them. Different parts of the plant can be utilized as components in dyes, medicines (walnut oil), cosmetic products, and even as cleansing products. The latter application is restricted to crushed walnut shells that make an effective, non-abrasive, cleanser for large metal constructions.

All our walnuts are sourced from trustworthy farmers. They don’t contain any added sugar, salt, or any other flavorings.

Are Organic Walnuts Good for You?

Yes, they surely are! Even the FDA agrees that organic walnuts are great and they’ve actually released a Qualified Health Claim to state such. Eating organic walnuts every day gives you a boost of energy and helps you meet the daily requirements of many essential vitamins and minerals. Doing this would also bring you quite a bit of joy because they are delicious and can enhance the flavor of many dishes.

In order to reap all the organic walnut benefits, you should eat the kernels with the skin still on. This tiny brownish layer of plant-tissue contains over 90% of organic walnut phenols. This means that removing it would reduce the antioxidant value of the nut greatly.

Luckily, the skin is fused so deeply into the kernel that removing it from it is almost impossible. You can peel it off while the walnut fruits are still green. At that time, the skin is thicker and whitish-yellow. However, once they mature, you can effectively peel off the skin only from toasted walnuts.
