I am planning an upcoming trip to Italy and want to make sure that I eat the best food while I am there. The problem with some other travel guides is that it's clear that the authors haven't even visited the places or eaten the meals! The Food Traveler's Guide to Emilia Romagna is the perfect guide- written by food fanatics that have been to the region and eaten the food themselves. Thank you for writing a delicious book (pun intended). I can't wait to eat my way through Italy!

We found this book valuable on a recent trip to Emilia-Romagna. I wouldn't say that it contains enormous amount of information that you can't find elsewhere, but if you're like me, you remember things better when you read them in a book as opposed to browsing with a million tabs open. There was some information in the book that I didn't see elsewhere, though, so it's valuable regardless.
Don't rely on this book as a guidebook, however. The author does provide places to try the foods and drinks mentioned, but those suggestions are very limited. We found it most useful as a learning tool that then equipped us to better appreciate what we were tasting once we found vendors and producers of the delicious foods the book tipped us off about!
Most travel books about Italy lack depth about Emilia Romagna, and lack a good focus on food, but not this one. If you're going to Italy and want a focus on food, the E-R region is not to miss, and this guidebook is well put together to give you a strong background on the local foods, and provides a great framework for your trip.
When you think of Italy, the names that come to mind, are Rome, Venice, Milan, and Florence, but necessarily Emilia Romagna. But this region should be on the top of our list which includes cities like Parma and Bologna. This area is replete with incredible food options, and of course wine. The author lets her passion flow as she shares her favorites whether it is cheese, pasta, or of course gelato. And interesting to learn about traditional balsamic vinegar. The age old traditions of this region contribute to some of these most delectable food options in the country. I imagine many people after this reading this book can hear their stomach growl or are booking a trip to Emilia Romagna.
Despite the title, the book seemed limited to covering a very few spots (Modena, for instance), despite the enormous wealth of subject matter in the region. Better proofreading would have also helped.

This might make a nice coffee-table book, with lots of photos of the cheeses, meats etc. that she knowledgeably describes. The problem is that there are no illustrations (at least in my Kindle edition) and we're left with her words and unfortunately she's not a pleasurable writer, narrative is lacking and style clunky even amateurish. Author cites Anthony Bourdain as the inspiration for this book which lacks entirely Bourdain's sense of fun and vitality. I'm heading to this area next week, unfortunately I don't think I'll be needing this.
The best food and drink experiences happen in Emilia Romagna. I am an Italophile and the Founder of Take Me Home Italy, a custom travel planning service for people who want more than the basic tour. And I highly recommend Amber Hoffman's book to anyone seeking a deep, fulfilling experience in Italy. Amber knows the best large scale and artisanal suppliers and restaurants where you can experience all the wine, food, and fun you would want. She gives the background every foodie wants and delivers for all lovers of Italian food and wine. Now I have to return to Emilia Romagna soon to try out more cheeses, more wines, and maybe a truffle hunt this year. Thank you, Amber, for your attention to detail, your thorough approach and your obvious love for what you are describing.
3.0 out of 5 starsSelf-published, badly in need of editing and some narrative

Hmm.... this is clearly a self-publishing effort but it needs SERIOUS editing and the layout is a shocker. No narrative at all. I rushed through it, got one or two tips and I'm sorry to say, wished I'd saved my money. I think this might be just a printed blog.
