About the Author
With a formal education in Systems Engineering and a lifetime of training in food and wine, Dr. Stephen Reiss, PhD, CWE has made a career in the wine industry as a teller of truths and tester of assumptions. Author, educator and frequent lecturer, Dr. Reiss’ contributions to the wine industry are at a personal level, helping professionals and enthusiasts to realize their wine tasting potential. Beginning in 1982 Dr. Reiss began his informal wine education, studying and competing in tasting competitions around the world. A perennial 3rd place finisher, Stephen's reputation for his remarkable palate memory helped to propel his career. By the early 90s he was sitting the MW, and the review he received after failing the exam remains of of his favorite quotes "Your encyclopedic knowledge of wine is so vast, you could be teaching the MW courses off the top of your head; however, your handwriting and spelling are so bad, you will never pass." While his handwriting and spelling have not improved over the years, his experience has certainly widened. Having consulted with wineries in Asia, South America, Europe and of course his home country of the US, Stephen has spent the last decade traveling the globe, searching for unique wines and flavors. His 8 (and growing number of) wine books includes the best selling "Juice Jargon - How to talk about wine" and his popular web site WineEducation.com has been a hallmark for those wishing to learn since 1995.
