One problem with the older unit was that it would not allow you to heat seal the bags closed until it achieved a very thorough removal of all of the air. Therefore I could not use it on soft or delicate food items. I tried to bag some bagels and negative pressure resulted in squished bagel pucks. This model allows you to choose when you want it to heat seal the bags. Today when I bagged some bagels. I allowed the vacuum to remove enough air so that the plastic shrank very close to the surface of the bagels without compressing them.I included a picture of said bagels.
I found that with the older vacuum sealer any liquids would also be drawn up by the vacuum. Often this would cause failure of the seal and a mess. Again the newer model allows me to seal the bags to achieve a tight shrink wrap but without making a mess. I recycled some plastic take-out Chinese containers, filled them with some delicious bean and bacon soup that my wife made today. As you can see in the picture the plastic shrinks down close to the surface of the soup but it doesn't make a mess. I bagged several helpings of soup and with the concavity achieved by the plastic containers they stack perfectly in my freezer. I am very happy that I saved so many of these plastic takeout containers. I plan to use many of them in the future for other meals.
Another plus with the new vacuum system is that it automatically seals the bag for you when you insert into the slot. With the older model you had to position the bag over the vacuum gasket.Read more ›
When I received this new model to review, I was excited at the many new (to me) features. There’s actually a button to make it seal instantly! And you can pulse the vacuum so that delicate items won’t get crushed (yay, now I can vacuum seal my cookies to send to friends!). And it still has the hose port so I can attach my mason jar sealer (which is probably the most awesome thing with these vacuum sealers. I keep my spices fresh in wide-mouth jars.). And now it also has an attachment for sealing those zip-top bags that have vacuum valved holes.
While I have not had as many issues as others seem to be having with getting the sealer to start sucking, I have on occasion had difficulty with the automatic sensor. I just hope that it does not get worse over time! With all the manual features (instant seal, pulse vaccum), you think FoodSaver would have had a button for “Start Suction” so that the automatic detection system could be bypassed.
I've owned both Foodsaver and Rival brand vacuum sealers. The two Rivals I owned were less expensive but failed within a year. The last one failed right away so I returned it and applied the credit to my first Foodsaver.
Prices on FoodSavers range approximately $100 to $300. The main function of all Foodsaver models is basically the same. You place food in a bag, put the bag in the sealer, it sucks the air out and then seals the bag airtight. The differences that change the price are related to aesthetics, automation, features and built in storage.
This Foodsaver 2-in-1 Appliance Vacuum Sealer, FSFSSL4840-000 model for example is near the high end and the FoodSaver Professional Vacuum Sealer is near the lower end of the range.
Except for the vacuum and seal process, the lower end model is manual. You fill the bag, open the appliance cover, place the open end of the bag into the appliance, close the cover, secure the lid latch and then push the VAC/SEAL button to begin the process. Indicator lights tell you when the process is complete at which time you unlock the lid latch and remove your sealed bag of food.Read more ›
I guess Foodsaver did.
I've had the manual Foodsaver for years. Almost never had a problem except when I made a bag to small.
This automatic one is another thing all together.
First let me say, it does work, most of the time. It has an even bigger problem with bags that are even a little to small than the manual one. At least with the manual one sometimes I can force the bag in place enough to work.
So far I've tried 10 bags. Only two were "caught" on the first try. Some took 3 or 4 tries.
Three times the vacuuming never shut off. I had to press the seal button to "finish" the seal which turned out not to be that good on those bags. The rest were okay.
With the manual one, you could feel your way though putting the end of the bag in the drip tray and what angle to hold the bag until you closed the unit. With this automatic one, when sealing a large item, the you cannot tell if the bag is at the right level for the grabbers to grab it.
I just think this automatic one is more pain than it is worth and I can do more bags quicker with the manual one. If I didn't get this from the Vine program, I would send it back. As it is, I will just stick with my manual one.
I don't recommend it.
