As for labeling. On the smooth side, whether I remember to label before or after packaging, I use waterproof/permanent chalkboard markers. Silver, white, gold. All show fairly well enough to read and dry quickly. I have a tiny dog, and buying food in bulk is a money saver. However, keeping items fresh, because of length of time needed Before food is used, makes the FOODSAVER rolls a great choice. I'm able to make really small bags, with a small amount of effort. There are also times when I wash a cut portion of original package items came in and insert in the package before vacuuming. Or I write on parchment paper and insert in package before vacuuming. Certain items keep their shape, so using this process the "labels" are still readable. Really ensures labeling doesn't wear off due to water etc.
Making small bags, I also preserve watercolor tube paint to save money/space/quality. Use for lots of craft items I buy in bulk to store without using boxes, containers that take up space in storage areas. When storing electronic components, these bags work great keeping small pieces from falling out of box and getting lost. I use these for any number of items I'm storing. Vacuum packaging isn't just for food. The uses are unlimited.
I prefer the Foodsaver bags over the rolls because if I’m not sealing both ends like you would do with the rolls, then that means less overheating of the sealing element on the Foodsaver. One of the biggest issues I have with Foodsaver is that it tends to overheat after about 8-10 uses and stops working properly as it melts the bag as soon as it comes into contact with the element. The bags won’t seal if the sealing element gets too hot and collapses those little channels in the bag that suck the air out. That’s also why some of the thinner off brand bags don’t seal very well when those channels collapse to easily.
I freeze coffee beans and nuts I buy in bulk the same way: I trim the top of the store-bag down to the level of the coffee as I slip it into a FoodSaver bag and it keeps those loose food items from puncturing the bags over time.
My creds: I have been using food-saving systems since the originals came out in the 1960's, so I have used almost every technology out there as it became available. The (now) FoodSaver brand was and is head and shoulders above the others. The bag has been the most important component, and FoodSaver again has the best bags going. It is one of only 2 brands out there that is recommended for food safety in terms of BPA's and other things I don't want next to food. (And has better selection and cost for home use.)
