Some have complained about sealing issues... Here's the deal - FoodSaver bags have little channels in the plastic that improve the performance of the vacuum. These also tend to channel any moisture up to the top of the bag - if any moisture gets into the area where the bag will be sealed, it won't seal properly. Here's some tips that can help - if you follow these, you will have trouble free performance..
1. pre-freeze - if you are doing fish or something like that, putting it in the freezer for an hour to firm it up a bit will make a huge difference.
2. pre-wrap - you can also wrap fish or other meats in plastic wrap before putting in the bag - this will help keep moisture in check.
3. cut the bag a bit bigger than you might actually need, the moisture won't get sucked up to the open end.
The one downside is that you're supposed to wait 10-15 seconds between seals, which the description doesn't say. But if you're working by yourself, bagging and sealing, this isn't much of an issue.
If you mess up and cut a bag too short, it won't seal and you'll have to start over. If the sealer keeps going on the regular tone for a while longer than expected, then hit the "seal button" again to stop the seal function. Usually when the seal is going right, the sealer will change tones and get higher pitched for a bit before going into seal mode.
The first thing I sealed was a yellow squash from my garden and it sealed fine. I only had problems when sealing thick items like chuck roasts. once I made the border longer like 4 or 5 inches the sealer worked fine on these thicker items. I tried using pre-cut bags but they didn't last long. And they are not real efficient because you can't cut them to the length you need. I like the long bag rolls much better. I think they are much less $$$ too.
It can take a while to do a lot of sealing. Don't plan on being done with a large job in an hour. I vaccumm sealed half a beef and took 2 afternoons to do it. About 2 or so hours each afternoon.
