Top Customer Reviews
UPDATE: These reviews go back to March 2005 and I see other reviews as recent as August 2007...so why hasn't this problem been fixed yet? The sealer is an excellent product, but these cannisters are useless. None of my original canisters hold their seal.
Today I looked at the bottom of this canister and see that there are three cracks in it. That means it cannot possibly hold a good seal. I hate to throw it away, but what good is it to me now?
I find these canisters to be an invaluable tool for food storage. When we get fresh strawberries at the Farmer's Market, we divide them up between several of the canisters (separated by layers of paper towel) and they last for several weeks! Amazing.
Some of the complaints are based on what I think are unrealistic expectations.
Don't expect one of these units to hold a strong vacuum for several months. They are designed to be vacuumed, then opened perhaps within a day or two, and then re-sealed. They aren't designed for long term storage.
I've had the cracking problem, but in my case it has only happened after I performed a "double vacuum" on a canister (thinking I was getting that "extra" level of vacuum). I have also had it happen to units that were several years old, but plastic does tend to get more brittle after time and I think several years of use out of one of these is reasonable.
One complaint - why can't I buy these individually? I would really like to purchase 3 or more of the same size. I don't want to only buy a set of three -- all different sizes.
Another complaint - their so called "30 day money back guarantee". I recently purchased (directly from FoodSaver") some sandwich storage contains by mistake (I couldn't see how big they were clearly on the website). I contacted FoodSaver and was told it would be no problem to return them within 30 days. We'll here's the problem. I had placed an order over $50.00 on their website in order to obtain free shipping. These items were about $15.00. FoodSaver doesn't pay for return shipping. Guess how much return shipping was going to cost? About $15.00! So much for a money back guarantee. I kept the units and I suppose I'll find an occasional use for them.
Overall, I've been very happy with the FoodSaver line of products over the years. The bag system is unparalleled. (DON'T buy pre-made bags! Get the rolls! Much cheaper!). But the company continues to feel like it's driven more by its infomercial roots and marketing, than by actual responsiveness to customers. Their relentless email marketing is questionable and their constantly shifting deals make me wary.
All that said, I will continue to be a customer, ,and just I'm now ordering another set of these canisters because although I would really like three of the middle size, this is all I can get!
