Editorial Reviews
Review
“Darya is my favorite kind of scientist--she finds the simple in the complex, the beauty in the chaos. If anyone will make you love (and rediscover) food, it’s her.” — Tim Ferriss
“In Foodist, Darya Pino gives the most sensible advice I’ve read about attaining and maintaining healthy weight without dieting. Her science-based approach tells you how to enjoy real food, make the best food choices, and not deny yourself the pleasures of eating. I recommend this book.” — Andrew Weil, M.D.

About the author

I'm Darya Pino Rose, a neuroscience Ph.D. and dedicated foodist, currently residing in foggy San Francisco. I spend most of my time thinking and writing about food, health and science. I eat amazing things daily and haven't even considered "going on a diet" since 2007.
I was born and raised on the sunny beaches of southern California. Before becoming a foodist I tried and succeeded at every weight loss plan under the sun. Now I hover about 5-8 pounds below my original goal weight without much effort and am in better shape than I was at 20, which is totally awesome.
In 2010, I completed my Ph.D in neuroscience at UC San Francisco. About a year before graduating I started writing about food and health at my website, Summer Tomato. By the time I defended my thesis, I had a new career.
Summer Tomato was one of TIME's 50 Best Websites of 2011. I have a bachelor's degree in Molecular and Cell Biology from UC Berkeley, and was recognized as one of the top students in my graduating class of 2003. I also play Zelda.
As you can see, I'm a total geek.

I'm a cardiologist. Over the years, I've seen countless patients that wanted to eat better, be more active or lose some weight.
And I've seen most of them not succeed.
Some had success with the latest diet craze .....for a while. But a year later, almost all of them regain those hard lost pounds. They end up discouraged and feeling like failures, but eventually I learned that it's not them that failed.
I started asking those patients that got healthier or lost weight and kept it off how they did it. Almost always, it was because they started eating real food, minimized processed food, and started moving more. As it turns out, there is no "miracle" diet or supplement or drug....those are the failures.
Darya gets it. Follow her plan. Put all of that energy expended on restrictive, miserable diets into real food, eating at home and moving more and it will make you healthier. And being healthier will help you attain your weight goal. The Foodist plan is easier and more enjoyable than dieting and it works (and frankly it's the only thing that does for most).
Foodist is not only a great plan but it's a really good read. It's well written, provocative, thoughtful and even funny at times.
This book is going to change a lot of lives for the better.
When I stumbled upon Summer Tomato a few weeks ago, Foodist was being promoted. I liked what I saw on the blog, but I thought - is there REALLY anything in the book that's not on the blog? Why pay for it? When I went past a Barnes and Noble while doing some errands, I sat down with the book and flipped through it for a few minutes. Honestly, I still wasn't convinced.
But the idea of the book kept following me around, so I decided to order it. How apt to find that processing and applying the information in the book is just like chewing and digesting food. Sitting down, setting the scene, and chewing each bite in a way that I wouldn't as a blog reader really made the information even more applicable and inspiring. There is a quality to one's attention when one reads a book versus a blog. It's like using a sieve instead of a colander. Personally, I "caught" way more from reading the book.
There was one idea that instantaneously revolutionized my eating - if there is food in your mouth, don't put food on your fork. I've always considered myself a "fast eater" and, while I'm still not devoted to counting chews, this prompt has had tremendous impact on HOW I've eaten over the past few days. Miraculously, this also makes it easier to change WHAT I eat. This piece of information is something that I might have skimmed over on the blog and I didn't even see it in the book when I was flipping through it. So, if you have a hard time justifying BUYING THE BOOK, I definitely understand. But I'm really glad I did.
FOODIST will go on my bookshelf along with Frank Lipman's SPENT (aka REVIVE) as reminders that eating is basic human maintenance. I've already made the recipes (and some variations) and had a lot of success. I agree with the premise that LIFE SHOULD BE AWESOME. :)
That is not to say the author believes losing weight or maintaining a healthy lifestyle is easy - most of us know from experience it is not - but Dr. Rose breaks the science of nutrition into digestible bites that are easy to understand and remember without oversimplifing. She shows you how to turn guilty diet cheats into selective indulgences and failures into learning opportunities.
No matter where you are on your quest to be healthy, look good, and feel well, Foodist will help you identify your "bright spots" to celebrate as well as your challenges to address and will guide you along the path to your own personal healthstyle.

This book is a must for anyone who has been plagued by the "diet, loose weight, pile it back on, diet, loose weight pile it back on, diet..." cycle.
Oh, and did I mention that you can still eat and enjoy good food and wine?
