As you may know from reading my cd reviews, I am old and a lover of many different types of music. So when I hear music that is current and sounds like the beautiful reverb and psychedelia of the 60's, I am ready to listen!

So recently I have been made aware of the great music from artists like Ty Segall, Mikal Cronin, Morgan Delt and now Tim Presley.

And now this release from Tim Presley, under the name of White Fence, is a great album of fuzz, psychedelia and Sgt Pepper and Thirteen Floor Elevator mixture of aural bliss!

The guitars ring dissonant and discordant on most of the songs with lyrics that may leave you wondering exactly what Presley is trying to say, yet never trite or boring.

My favorite songs are the opening track, "The Recently Found," which segues into "Anger! Who Keeps You Under?" Other noteworthy songs are "Actor," "Arrow Man," and "The Light." I can say there really isn't one bad song on this whole album.

The production is raw, yet polished, dissonant yet full of harmony. If you like psychedelia, then give this cd a listen... it is definitely a great cd from a musical genius.

This is reminiscent of early Pink Floyd (Piper At The Gates Of Dawn) and Syd Barrett's solo albums. Recorded in Ty Segall's garage on an 8 track recorder. Put this on and jump back to the late 60s Psychedelic Rock scene.

I stumbled across this via Amazon's recommendation and am impressed. Never heard of the band, but definitely enjoying the record. A great mix of rock sub-genres represented from start to finish. Some psych-folk, psych-pop, a smattering of acoustic, honky tonk ballads and more. All of it very good.

Such a great mix of the best of new and old psychedelic, pop, and garage rock stylings. Hints of the Beatles, Frowning Clouds, and even Robyn Hitchcock. A worthwhile album to own in any high-quality format.

Super spacey, psych madness. It'll make you do one of those convulsive, full-body types of dances.

7th album in the last four years from California band led by Tim Presley (Strange Boys, Darker My Love). White Fence play captivating & realistic sounding 60s influenced pop with a natural nostalgic sheen that’s slightly under-produced and warm, trailing black-light melodies in a harmony-sparkled glow of hook-driven beauty. The songs feel fresh & genuine; the vocals are spot-on hippy-trippy sharp; the guitars & keys bleed flower-power authenticity. Includes contributions from Ty Segall (Epsilons), Nick Murray (the Young Veins) & Mikal Cronin. Reminiscent of bands like Elf Power, The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger, Mmoss/Doug Tuttle, the Byrds, Brian Jonestown Massacre, the High Dials, the Who, Beachwood Sparks, the Limiñanas, Robyn Hitchcock. “For the Recently Found Innocent” is an understated masterpiece of 60s flavored retro-psychedelic pop. Brilliant.

This is a must-have, must-hear record to own and cherish. I am transported to another time and place listening to these songs, a retro sound but with a very modern, even futuristic vibe and moody feel. Whatever previous White Fence records sounded like (and I truly don't know, this is my first) there is nothing low-fi about this. Sounds outstanding on my HiFi. And the songs, not a throwaway here. Hard to describe but it reminds me of a Ray Davies record if the Kinks had never existed. This should be on every critics best of year list, and yours.

***NEVER REVIEW SOMETHING AFTER LISTENING TO IT ONCE. YOU END UP GIVING POOR REVIEWS TO GOOD THINGS***

Six months and thirty or so listens later, I realize that everything I wrote below is bunk. My bad. If nothing else, TP can play that guitar!

It saddens me to say that I don't really care for this album; I've really enjoyed the previous four, and the live album is ok. But 'Recently Found Innocent' lacks hits and riffs. Maybe Presley has been too busy, or maybe he lost his inspiration, but most songs on this album consist of a meandering verse, a repeated phrase to break the monotony, and some vague noodling guitar.

I sincerely hope he hasn't become a 'songwriter,' because that would indicate that he has begun to take himself (and pop music) too seriously. Or maybe he's further proof of the Residents' Theory of Obscurity: perhaps Presley does his best work when he thinks no one is listening.

That said, 'Arrow Man' and 'Paranoid Belt' come close to being enjoyable, but don't expect any kind of hook on those songs or any of the others on the album. Black Flag's 'Damaged' has more hooks, and 'Damaged' reigns supreme (in my mind) as the ultimate no-hook, anti-pop record by an American artist. (PIL's 'Flowers of Romance' wins for Britain: it is indeed hookless, yet still enjoyable. Also, hooks are subjective, so don't take my word for it.)

Then again, I like gimmicks, weird noises, obtuse lyrics and instrumental naivete; I have horrible taste in music, and even worse opinions about it.
