From the Back Cover
USA Today bestselling author Beverly Jenkins returns with the first book in a breathtaking new series set in the Old West
Rhine Fontaine is building the successful life he's always dreamed of—one that depends upon him passing for White. But for the first time in years, he wishes he could step out from behind the façade. The reason: Eddy Carmichael, the young woman he rescued in the desert. Outspoken, defiant, and beautiful, Eddy tempts Rhine in ways that could cost him everything . . . and the price seems worth paying.
Eddy owes her life to Rhine, but she won't risk her heart for him. As soon as she's saved enough money from her cooking, she'll leave this Nevada town and move to California. No matter how handsome he is, no matter how fiery the heat between them, Rhine will never be hers. Giving in for just one night might quench this longing. Or it might ignite an affair as reckless and irresistible as it is forbidden . . .--This text refers to the mass_market edition.

Either way, it was nice but not what I am used to especially after so many delicious books from the lovely Mrs. Jenkins.
Even though not my favorite, I will read again for sentimental love of the author.
Eddy is a grab the bull by the horns kind of woman. There was nothing left for her in Denver (except Portia and Reagan) and she was just robbed of her purse AND she had already given up her boarding room AND her sister wasn't tryin to be a sister and help her out. So does she cry and wallow about it....nope! She finds a way to get to her destination. Through some good and bad she ended up in Virginia City, Nevada (and like its Ms Bev books there is history here so I had to go looking things up :) .
Rhine Fontaine who we met in Through the Storm. A slave by birth who change his circumstance and decided to pass. Now he didn't pass just for the betterment of himself. He used his passing to help other Blacks, which was so damn good). He was gonna do whatever he can to make change.
Eddy (Black woman) + Rhine (presumed White man) = a whole lot going on!! It's a great book!! I loved every moment of it! We have heard of freemen selling themselves into slavery for women but never one giving up everything he worked for for a woman!
Great books! Another Ms Beverly classic
Then we read about Eddy who was black women but born free so she never knew slavery but experienced racism. Rhine and Eddy were characters I've read about in any novel!! Rhine was alpha, self assured but kind, compassion and caring. He lived his life passing off as a white man but he used this to help the black community even when it cost him customers. He was unselfish but stern and decisive. For all the good attributes, he was still related, human, achievable. I feel in love!! I got so vested in this character. Eddy was determined, moraled but also human. She had desires, dreams and needs. She was stern, forthright but never rude!! She was polite and pleasant but firm in her beliefs, said exactly how she felt and sympathetic and kind without being a push over. These were perfect characters.
Other Authors, please take a lesson from Ms. Jenkins! You can have strong female characters minus the rudeness and unkindness. Strong does NOT equal rude or uncaring. And being caring and kind do not mean that you're weak and a push over.
Anyway the love story was enthralling. Who needed suspense. The growing love, and banter between the two was enough to captivate and hold you there. Rhine's reasons for being attracted to Eddy was so vivid. Her good attributes were always on display so I fell for her as well. When he told her he wanted, the charming, heart pumping pursuit that followed was off the charts. Oh my word! This wasn't an explicit book, but the words along brought the heat!! I felt the chemistry, was jealous of it, and i was on journey to love with them. It felt real, and that's what makes this book so good! My heart was heavy about what the H and h had to endure because of the race and how it affect their ability to be together.Hats off to Ms. Jenkins now my favorite author.
However!! I gave the book 4 stars instead of five because of the unnecessary protraction at the end! At about 95% of the book, twists and turns were thrown in but couldn't be developed properly. Just unnecessary BUT IT PALE IN COMPARISON TO THIS OTHERWISE MASTER PIECE!
I WOULD RECOMMEND 1000 TIMES!
