This is a fast paced love story, but it is much more. The action is tense and well defined. The conflicts between the characters is engaging and we are given enough information to understand what motivates them. I loved the world that is described, the climate, the look and feel, makes the story come to life and seem like an actual place. The dynamic and blossoming relationship between Layna and Seth is very engaging, not to mention hot and steamy. Love at first sight is typically a hard storyline for me to accept, but the situation the characters find themselves in makes it believable. I enjoyed this story and did not feel like I was lost or missing information because I had not yet read other books in the series. I certainly see this as a very healthy standalone or strong addition of this series.
I highly recommend this title, as well as Ms. Eckrich's other books. Everything I have read from this author has been great.
Layna, a Natural forced to hide her abilities, is patrolling Sector 12 as it's her night for duty. However, she discovers the ravagers have broken through her sister, Tiahna's, the Regent, force field and barely escapes an attack. As she does, she finds a man laying there and upon closer look realizes, thankfully, that he's alive. But it isn't long before Amun, one of her sister's guards, and a man who has been quite obvious in the past about his interest in Layna, appears and he and his men quickly take the man to the Cell. Layna can't believe it when Amun refers to him as Seth, the one that everyone whispers about regarding his skills and savage actions.
Seth, an enemy of the Regent as he's open about being a Natural, is on a mission and it includes Layna. He's there specifically for her.
When Layna, unable to stay away from him, visits Seth in the Cell, they're soon surrounded by guards, and Seth uses his ability to transport them out of there. However, they still need to fully escape and Layna has to come to terms with the fact that she's now the enemy and no longer allowed to return home.
When Layna loses consciousness after being injured, she has a memory from her childhood when her Dad would take her someplace safe so she could practice her powers. But the day she remembers also involved an attack on the people helping her and a meeting with a boy that had beautiful blue eyes, a boy that she felt connected to in some way. A boy that made her feel like Seth does, that had eyes like Seth's.
When Layna mentions to Seth that she knows him from that day, Seth confesses that her earlier memories of him were erased because they weren't supposed to meet yet.
"I'm sorry it took so long for me to come for you." - Seth
Will Seth and Layna fulfill the prophecy of stopping the Regent and her council and save Sector 12? How will Layna react upon learning the truth about her sister? Can Seth keep Layna safe? Or will he be the one to destroy her? Can they overthrow the Regent? Will Layna take her sister's place? Will Layna admit to being a Natural? Will Seth and Layna get their HEA?
One-click now and follow along as these two fight for not only their future, but the freedom of those around them. While I was able to follow along with this story, I feel I would've benefitted from reading the previous eleven books in the series.
**I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.**
Another thing that REALLY turned me off from this book, is by the writer being a woman why would you think an attempted rape is entertaining, there was no need for that to be put in the book, I mean really. TASTELESS!!!, I'm just glad she did not write it as a finished situation. DISGUSTING!!!!!!! I was really getting tired of reading this book and was only at 32%. When you cannot figure out what to write, then do not write at all.
Awww, isn't that so sweet, Ravengers after us, and Army after us, but we have so much time that we can have a mud fight and have all this fun. Predictable, I actually saw Kesi coming, how her actions were being described early on in the book, It did not surprise me that she was working for the other team.
So, calm, nice, sweet, touching Lana, gets upset with a child that cannot answer her questions and uses force with her. Really...she never loses control, and the first time she does it is on a child. If this is the kind of mind this writer have, maybe she should not write books until after a few sessions. After reading all the other books, I am not understanding the need for all this extra stuff to be in this book.
Of course the book would not have been any good without them having to deal with the rebellion I mean come on, didn't see that coming (mission impossible book style without Tom Cruise). Okay, so Zane is her brother, and he is so sick and sinister that he can contemplate having his sister raped by all of his men, since she is supposed to be a virgin...that is sick within itself to think let alone put to paper. Glad it did not happen
I thought that this book would be dragged out, unnecessarily extended with 51 chapters and I was not wrong...I skipped from 30 to 41 and was still able to keep up...did not feel lost in one bit...so that tells me whatever else was written was just wasted space. That is when you know a book is not good or great but just okay...Especially since I have tried to do this with several books and actually had to go back and read what I skipped to understand. Not here.
I guess it was great how much sex they were able to have in all of the destruction that was going on. Did this writer even read the other writers books or reviews. All of that sex was not necessary in this book, the gradual relationship build up and then maybe one or two times without all of the graphic heavy mention would have been good. NOW do not get me wrong, I enjoy the graphic scenes....when it is warranted, and with the other books and they should at least flow together somewhat...it was not needed.
The protection spell, DUMB!!!! I'm not a doctor but I do not believe a dead person can actually do what the writer is trying to imply with that...Alright I'm done, I actually did not care to read the rest of the story....SORRY...
