Forbidden Planet's innovative electronic music score (credited as ''electronic tonalities'' ) was composed by Louis and Bebe Barron. Using ideas and procedures from the book, Cybernetics: Or, Control and Communication in the Animal and the Machine (1948) Barron constructed his own electronic circuits that he used to generate the ''bleeps, blurps, whirs, whines, throbs, hums, and screeches''. Firstly they were an important step in the history of electronic music. The Barron's pioneering efforts in electronic music, inspired by computer pioneer Norbert Wiener's classic book "Cybernetics" is a wonderful chapter in technological history. Today electronic music has moved out of the lab and the Rube Goldberg type experimentation of the Barrons into the mass market. Lets not forget this chapter.
Secondly, they helped make Forbidden Planet the wonderful and - in many ways - timeless sci fi movie it is. A few centuries from now, when much of our sci fi movie output is long forgotten, Forbidden Planet - with it's mixture of Shakespeare, Freud and the promise of space travel - will be still studied and loved. And the Barron's score - the "electronic tonalities" , as they were billed, will be seen as a big part of the accomplishment.
