Truly excellent. I've read all his books except this one (I mean up until I read this one) and expected this to be supernatural too. But, tho it's not, it is written so well that you get really caught up in the story. I watched the old movie of The Devil Rides Out on tv the other day and Christopher Lee played Duke de Richleau. So, while I was reading this, of course I could see him in the book, and why they chose him for the movie!! Try his other books too,mainly those with 'Devil' in the title.

Good semi-historical adventure story

I first read Dennis Wheatley decades ago, about 1965, and was fascinated by the fact that there were actually people who seriously practiced black magic. Black magic as it is presented in bu novels is fanciful, but entertaining. This is an adventure novel rather than fantasy, despite the skull of the cover. It is also the first novel that Dennis Wheatley wrote, which makes me wonder how it can be Duke De Richleau Book 5. It is fast-paced, fun to read, and has likable characters. One thing that makes it interesting is that it is set in Russia during the Stalin era before World War II, and depicts well the hysterical optimism of Communists and Russian citizens of that era.

This is not a new story by any means and so the style is dated. If you can get passed that then it is a great adventure yarn which will leave you wanting more. It is a shame that all his novels have not been put on audio book as they are perfect for a long drive.

Classic old school Wheatley, long on aristocrats, daring do, stiff upper lips and smoking jackets. If I had one minor gripe it was a bit lacking in the old 'occult' area. But it really is a tiny niggle. The story was page turning fun, set on the large background of Russia, Ukraine and Austria back in the days of the USSR and from an era now long long gone!

Wheatley’s first novel is fast-paced and very readable. His depiction of Stalinist Russia and its version of the communist ideal is quite realistic and probably accurate. The characters do have a very narrow outlook on the world (so it seems to me) and though this book is not quite as ‘non-PC’ as some of Wheatley’s other novels, I do sometimes cringe at their language and assumptions. However, the 1920s and 1930s were, I suppose, the age of the gentleman adventurer in fiction – rich, bored and well-connected – so the reader needs to bear that in mind when judging.

Re-reading after about three decades, I still enjoyed it.
