“Pulse” had a relatively straightforward linear plot, framed by the story of Liz’s accident, coma, and awakening. “Force” depicts parallel story lines across dimensions, implying the totality of past, present, and future in different spaces, making the lust for power (which is still one of the central themes) even scarier. Of course, linear plot scheme wasn’t adequate anymore, nor were the classic unities of action, place, and time – and Sander bravely (and skillfully!) abandoned them altogether. I believe that less trained readers might find it hard to comprehend certain chapters (Tory’s story, for example) but once they push themselves through, they’ll be very happy that they did so.
The author illustrated a chaos and then offered an intuitive feeling of sense. On top of that, she has given some hints that connect the worlds of the novel with our own experience. Not all wars are led on battlefields. There are other ways – and they are terrifying. I literally can’t wait to read the book 3.
And the ending! What a lead in to book three. Sander had better promise to get that one published soon.
