I used the .035 shims (they include .030, .035, and .040.) Technically, you are supposed to measure the clutch packs to ensure that they are within spec. If you go too thick, you won't be able to get the cross pin back in. My clutch packs are nice and tight and I was able to get the pin back in with relative ease.
I did not replace the "Z" spring, but I did find that my spider gears (the smaller pinion gears) had some chipped teeth, so I replaced all 4 gears at the same time, with genuine Ford parts as well.
I did the job by myself without any help. You can get the spider gears back into position by yourself without any help.
