Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Foreign Deceit was originally published in December of 2012, written during a thirteen-month stint in a small town in northern Italy with my wife and son. It is my first novel in the David Wolf mystery series, and my first novel altogether. Since that day I hit the publish button a year ago, I've completely re-worked the novel from front to back, addressing issues that were detracting from the reading experience with a professional editor, and republished it as a second edition in November of 2013 -- the edition presented here.
As far as the experience of writing my first novel goes, I'll always remember pecking on the keyboard for hundreds of hours in a little muggy room listening to screaming fifty-cc engines and loud conversations in Italian as they passed by the open window, sucking in exhaust fumes in the morning, Egyptian pizza aromas at noon, and mouthwatering fish smells on Fridays.
I enjoyed writing this first book so much, and wasn't prepared for how much stress it would cause as well (thank goodness for Prosecco). I probably would have felt even more strain had I known the process wouldn't be done until a year later, when I was back in Colorado -- back where I had found myself longing for while writing that first draft.
This is the first in what I intend to be a long line of mystery thriller books starring David Wolf and his friends in the department in the up-and-coming ski resort town of Rocky Points, Colorado. I hope it's as much of an adventure for you to read as it was for me to write.

About the Author

Born in the northwestern United States and raised on the front range of Colorado, Jeff Carson attended the University of Colorado at Boulder, where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Environmental Sciences.

Armed with his specialized credentials, Jeff worked at golf courses for the next decade, dreaming of becoming a golf professional one day. After a long stint as an employee that doused his passion for the game, Jeff broke from the golf industry, and then he broke away from a few other career choices, and during an extended trip to Italy discovered a dormant passion for writing.

Jeff now writes mystery and thriller books starring his lead character, David Wolf--a cop from the Colorado Rocky Mountains with a good heart and pair of fists to match.

Currently there are 8 full-length David Wolf Mystery Thriller series novels and one short story, listed below in chronological order.

I don't have high hopes for books I can download for free, but this one was pretty good. Officer Wolf was a tough, smart protagonist, and the story was intriguing. There were some parts that stretched credulity: he was willingly helped by two young women--both of whom were gorgeous, and he escaped some pretty messy situations. However, the plot moved well, with enough action to keep me reading.

The story, however, did not reach an adequate ending. The action that began the novel was left unresolved. The Silversmith, Carson's shorter sequel, was needed to bring the entire story to a satisfying conclusion. I'm glad it was available to borrow, because I was frustrated by the lack of an ending in Foreign Deceit.

There were lots of annoying spelling and grammar problems in both books: "Now Connell was a child taking those reigns and running...." Reins
"...through the thick smoke to Earl, who laid on top of Wolf's leg..." Lay
"The long barrel of man with the trucker hat's 45 caliber revolver was dug into the dirt..." Huh?
"You're dad was killed by the Connells, wasn't he?" Your (and there was another place where your was used instead of the correct you're).

After a while, I found the errors difficult to overlook. As with many free or low-cost e-books, a good editor was really needed.

The plot was not bad, but it was obviously written using voice recognition software. It looks as if no one read it before sending it out. No editing was applied, resulting in MANY homophone errors: Site for sight, chalk-full for chock-full, etc. There were so many of these errors (nearly on every page) that it ultimately became very distracting and kept me from being fully engaged in the book. It was actually hard for me to finish; I dreaded opening it. I paid $2.99 for this book, and I wish it had been 99 cents. Or free.

This is novel for those readers who seek action, intrigue, and mystery from the get go. It's the opposite of an Ayn Rand book which demands extreme patience and long term commitment (took me months to get through Atlas Shrugged). This is a quick read because it moves fast and you can't put it down. I'm sure I'm a bit biased because the story takes place in two of my favorite places on earth, Colorado, and Italy, which I enjoyed due to the ovbious geographic knowledge of the aurthor. It is very rare that I even write a review but this one's worth it. If you're looking for fast moving, addictive, modern adventure mystery, this read is for you.

As others have already mentioned, I found the book to contain a great many grammatical and spelling errors, along with poor choices of words. It makes me wonder if the story was dictated and never read by the author! The idea of self-publishing is fine, but the author needs to do the requisite work to present something polished. This book is lacking that polish.

The basic story in itself is good. The characters are adequately developed but the book would definitely have benefited from a round or two of proofreading - the frequent butchering of spelling in both English and Italian provided for way too many distractions, as did the several inconsistencies in the story.

I read this novel in about 3 days... it was hard to put it down before going to sleep, needless to say it did not take very long because it kept me very interested until the end. Although this book is considered fiction Mr. Carson uses very accurate details and descriptions to keep the reader on the edge of their seat throughout each chapter. The way he is able to weave a story of an American cop(David) in a foreign country with his ups and downs is fantastic.

I look forward to future novels including the main character Mr. Wolf to find out where he will be next. I recommend this to anyone who is looking for a modern day mystery novel.

I thought the story was relatively good. However, the grammar and spelling definitely should have been proofed. There are always errors, but in my opinion, this book had entirely too many. I won't buy the second book in the series.

If the powers that be think I will buy the second book in this series to find out the ending of this book, they are mistaken. This was a pretty good book but it left me hanging at the end. This is a sure way to get me to write this author off my list.
