Almost. While I enjoyed the complex plot and story line, there were a few things that I found somewhat less than appealing. First was Ms. Katt's insistence on switching between first and third person narratives. While I often enjoy the multiple view points, I believe her story would have been better served by remaining in the third person. There were quite a few times in the story when I became slightly confused by who was in the driver’s seat. Also, the romantic relationship between the two main characters – Jenna and Jackson seemed artificial in its conflict. There were quite a few times when my reaction to the latest drama in their relationship was “oh, come on!”. Instead of providing me with the impression of two mature, professional people (one is a federal agent, the other an attorney), who had the occasional disagreement, I got the impression of two jealous teenagers.
I did however enjoy the interplay between the minor characters of Elaine and Brandon, and hope that their relationship is explored more fully in subsequent books. The classic tension of first attraction and temptation was expertly done, and it is in this subtle, yet descriptive emotion that Sydney Katt seems to really excel.
The plot of the book is complex, yet comforting predictable. The twists and turns are hinted at well in advance, and the reader is given every opportunity to solve the case, and the author does a commendable job of giving clues without being stridently obvious in her approach.
If you’re looking for a passionate romance with mystery/thriller undertones, this is a good choice.
