Only quibble is at the end when mother visits in dreams. Dead people are dead until the resurrection.
Ecclesiastes 9:5
For the living know that they will die,
but the dead know nothing.
1 Thess. 4:15-18
According to the Lord’s word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. 18 Therefore encourage one another with these words.
I couldn’t wait to read Forest Child after I finished God’s Daughter. Well Heather didn’t disappoint me. This book was just as good as book one. Heather Gilbert once again brought us a story that has lots of historical details about the Vikings. The exploits of Freydis had me wandering what she was going to do next. With that woman you could never be sure because at heart she was a real warrior. The description of each battle and the characters were so vividly explained. I found myself actually rooting for her because of the volva’s terrible practices. The dangers they faced during this time were terrible and sometimes the actions couldn’t be planned out and sometimes Freydis tried to plan how each phase of a battle might go.
It was a struggle for some to give up their pagan gods. Read this book and find out Freydis’ weaknesses and her strengths and how God changes her and some of the other characters. Such an interesting story that I enjoyed very much.
If you like the history of long ago I recommend God’s Daughter and Forest Child. I don’t think you will be disappointed.
Throughout this book I danced between strong dislike and deep compassion for the main character. The balance Heather managed to maintain was artful and impressive. I had trouble putting this book down, as I did with the first in the series which I liked even more than this one.
I'm hoping there is going to be a book three in the future because I'm not yet ready for my time in this intriguing Viking world she's created to end and I highly recommend this series to anyone who appreciates very real, raw fiction. Keep up the great work Heather!
