James Matthews spends her days playing video games with the guys, saving lives, and oh yeah having a secret relationship with her boss, Addison Lee. Despite pressure from Addison, James hasn't come out to her parents or co-workers yet so the relationship stands still. James has continuous nightmares depicting a toddler girl whom she saved from a horrendous fire two years ago. When a second fire occurs and the girl walks away unscathed James begins to question the significance. Enter Addison's ex, police officer Heath, and James is stuck in a now or never situation if she wants to keep the girl. Will James come out and keep Addison? What is up with the little girl who isn't afflicted by fire?
Forever Burn definitely caught me off guard and I was pleasantly surprised to discover this isn't just a contemporary romance. Instead I found this book was a wonderful and refreshing story like Nicholas Sparks meets Stephen King. James was a lovable character who tries to always do the right thing and will go above and beyond for the ones she loves. The beginning of the book sucked me into the drama and action in the lives of firefighters. Then the novel shifts and adds a new element which sets the plot moving forward.
A few things stuck out to me and made me frustrated while reading. First, James was portrayed as "one of the guys" drinking beers, going home to her bachelor pad etc. etc. and then becomes nurturing Suzy Homemaker all at once. I didn't find this believable and was disappointed that fun and tomboyish James was gone. Also, I wanted more explanation on the discoveries James makes about herself- the character reads a book towards the end and I wanted to know WHAT IS SHE READING!? The information was never clarified so I still have questions lingering.
Going into this story blind I wasn't aware of some of the elements involved so there isn't much left to say without giving too much away. What I can say was this book was unique, thrilling, and full of endearing characters. (I also loved Max!) Be prepared for a lot of action, some drama, and an ending that will sit with you for a while after reading. I highly recommend this book to those seeking something that doesn't fit into just one genre- a great story, a unique element, and some lovin' to keep you interested.
Working in a firehouse James is not a stranger to some dangerous situations. She works along side her best friend Max and a secret lover in Addison.
When dreams of a child that she saved from a fire keep happening, James wonders what is going on in her head. Addison is there to try and help her through the dreams and figure out what is happening.
Over all this is a sweet tale, and one that will make you smile and maybe cry(I know I did).
I would have loved to have seen more of a connection between the two main characters, but the story is still great.
I am moving on to book two now!
