In ways her first person accounts are interesting, as I've never seen a book written quite like that and other times, they're annoying.
I found it a bit odd that they gathered the eggs in the morning numerous times. A: Chickens typically go to roost once it is dark and don't lay eggs during the night. B. They were gathering eggs in the morning during the winter months in a northern state. If the chickens are roosting, they're not going to keep the eggs warm and they're going to have frozen eggs. You gather eggs in the evening, not tin he morning.; made me wonder if she'd ever had chickens in a cold climate before.
There was mention more than once of getting apples out of a bin located in the barn to feed the horses during this first book which was set in December. Apples in the barn in a bin in December in a northern state too would be frozen unless of course, the barn was heated, which this family was said to be very poor, so I seriously doubt the barn was heated to keep two horses warm.
It did hold my interest enough to make me read the second and third book to find out who done it. I wasn't crazy about the ending and the boys father but it was an OK read.

I want the whole story in one book not have to track down another to finish the story.
