#1 New York Times Bestseller
In this pathbreaking guide, two of the world’s most popular and trusted pet care advocates reveal new science to teach us how to delay aging and provide a long, happy, healthy life for our canine companions.
Like their human counterparts, dogs have been getting sicker and dying prematurely over the past few decades. Why? Scientists are beginning to understand that the chronic diseases afflicting humans—cancer, obesity, diabetes, organ degeneration, and autoimmune disorders—also beset canines. As a result, our beloved companions are vexed with preventable health problems throughout much of their lives and suffer shorter life spans. Because our pets can’t make health and lifestyle decisions for themselves, it’s up to pet parents to make smart, science-backed choices for lasting vitality and health.
The Forever Dog gives us the practical, proven tools to protect our loyal four-legged companions. Rodney Habib and Karen Becker, DVM, globetrotted (pre-pandemic) to galvanize the best wisdom from top geneticists, microbiologists, and longevity researchers; they also interviewed people whose dogs have lived into their 20s and even 30s. The result is this unprecedented and comprehensive guide, filled with surprising information, invaluable advice, and inspiring stories about dogs and the people who love them.
The Forever Dog prescriptive plan focuses on diet and nutrition, movement, environmental exposures, and stress reduction, and can be tailored to the genetic predisposition of particular breeds or mixes. The authors discuss various types of food—including what the commercial manufacturers don’t want us to know—and offer recipes, easy solutions, and tips for making sure our dogs obtain the nutrients they need. Habib and Dr. Becker also explore how external factors we often don’t think about can greatly affect a dog’s overall health and wellbeing, from everyday insults to the body and its physiology, to the role our own lifestyles and our vets’ choices play. Indeed, the health equation works both ways and can travel “up the leash.”
Medical breakthroughs have expanded our choices for canine health—if you know what they are. This definitive dog-care guide empowers us with the knowledge we need to make wise choices, and to keep our dogs healthy and happy for years to come.

I have to admit, I've had dogs pretty much my whole life, and I've run an animal rescue group for several years. Even with that background, I learned something new in every chapter. It's interesting, engaging and informative.
For pet parents interested in better health options for your dogs, there is an overwhelming array of information online. Way too much to digest, actually. This book boils it down, with just enough of the scientific explanation to make it clear the authors know their stuff. Their explanations are straightforward, and the lessons learned are easy to implement.
The Forever Dog will save you a fortune on vet bills in the future by helping you prevent problems before they occur. It's a very small investment for people who love their dogs and want to give them better, longer lives. Well done!
This book was basically a hardback version of their social media posts over many years. But the book gives us more details. Often, I get frustrated with their Facebook posts because many are delivered with partial information and their following is so large that it's near impossible to get their attention if you have follow-up questions. Well, this book helps with the follow-up questions.
I didn't learn a lot of new action items when reading this book (I'm a dog nutrition blogger) - but I found the background behind WHY we do what we do helpful. And I walked away with a lot of reminders - the importance of listening to our dogs, dogs don't have a biological need for carbs, and it's living with humans can be stressful to dogs.
The book didn't inspire me to make any changes in my dogs' life, but that's because I've been reading and writing about dog nutrition and raising dogs naturally for more than eight years. Despite my experience, I still enjoyed the book and look forward to using it as a reference.
Whether you're an experienced raw feeder who is on top of your dogs' nutrition and health OR your picking up a puppy in two weeks - this book is for you. Either you'll skim through it and focus on the sections that make sense to you OR you'll read it cover to cover, highlighting and flagging while making notes in the margin.
I was able to get through the book in a few days. It's a lot of information and while not all of it applies to my dogs, I don't regret my purchase because I feel more confident about the choices I've made for my dogs and more prepared for future dogs. Because there will always be dogs in our lives.
The only criticism I have for the book is the small print. While I have decent eyesight, the small print took some getting used to. I found that reading in a bright room or during bright daylight worked best for me. If small print deters you from checking out this book - look for the Audible or Kindle version. On my Kindle, I can increase the size of the print.

etc. All of these issues are addressed in this book. Probably much more I just have not had a chance to thoroughly read every page.
My thanks to Dr. Becker and Mr. Habib—This book will be my go-to resource. And my dogs (and cats) thank you as well.

Many may scoff but because your vet won't accept what is known but by keeping their pockets fat is masking those issues & not getting to the root and fixing appropriately.
This book is one of those to add to the way we care for our beloved pets. Knowledge is key...and some of the info in here pet parents known for 30+ years & like many, incl myself learnt via an holistic vet and undertook the journey.
Now it's all in one place.
It's worth the read!
5*
However, I was expecting more.. especially in terms of layout & was expecting goto info with the actual reference to the data & research and starter recipe's. Knowing that authors have taught us online and produced material prior, this was the downside. But I've been made aware this tool online, but what if you don't want to be online OR it's not available.
I still think CANINE NUTRIGENOMICS: THE NEW SCIENCE OF FEEDING YOUR DOG FOR OPTIMUM HEALTH
by Diana Laverdure and W. Jean Dodds is also a must have, to knowledge ourselves, this book will sit nicely next to it. Alongside dvd pet fooled (must watch).
We all want our 4legged family to live healthier & to a good age.

I've been following your content for sometime so I was skeptical that the book would just compile content that's already been published and discussed via your pages collectively, because I know Rodney likes to share his knowledge to the world to raise awareness to pet parents and I'm truly grateful.
But I'm pleased to say there's elements in the book that I've not seen them talk about before and it goes allot deeper than just nutrition/pet food "nasties".
This book was clearly published for your every day reader who happens to feed kibble, I love it's simplicity and layout, it's perfect for the layman's of the world like me, yes I still consider myself a lay person, the thesaurus is my best friend, big complex jargon words are my enemies!
Safe to say it was perfectly written for me, so I'm sure many others will thoroughly enjoy it too!
I have no doubt in my mind that this book will help reshape the world and improve pets lives for all the owners that read it!

Some good suggestions about diet and exercise included, but nothing revolutionary or novel, so I'm not sure it was a good buy.
Easy to read, although I felt that much of the book had a scaremongering quality to it.
Overall, OK, useful starting point if you want to learn more about diet/health, but not as unbiased/scientific as I'd hoped.
