Forever & Ever is a superlative two CD set of Perry Como's great hits recorded early on in his career. This gives Perry's fans a lot to be happy about as some of these tracks are not found on too many other Perry Como CDs. The quality of the sound is rather good especially considering the age of these recordings; and I like the artwork, too.
The first CD starts with Perry Como singing his best on "I Wonder Who's Kissing Her Now;" this tune has a big band style arrangement but it still sounds good today. "In My Little Red Book" features Perry front and center--right where he belonged and still belongs today! Perry does this one up right and the musical arrangement never drowns him out. I really like "It All Comes Back To Me Now;" Perry never sounded better. "Deep In The Heart Of Texas" swings brightly; and there's also the joy and confidence a man feels when he finds his one true love in "Long Ago And Far Away." In addition, when Perry sings "Lili Marlene" he really shows off his incredible talent. "I'm Confessin' That I Love You" has a fine arrangement and Perry Como delivers "I'm Confessin' That I Love You" without a superfluous note! What a champ! "If I Loved You" is very pretty; and I especially like "I'm Gonna Love That Gal Like She's Never Been Loved Before." "I'm Gonna Love That Gal Like She's Never Been Loved Before" is romantic and upbeat. The catchy melody is tough to get out of my head--it's all THAT good. "I'm Always Chasing Rainbows" uses the percussion to make this very sweet even if it's a melancholy ballad. "Prisoner Of Love" again showcases Perry Como crooning perfectly. The first CD closes with Perry Como doing an excellent job on "Surrender;" "Surrender" charms me with its beauty and I couldn't wait to listen to the next CD.
The second CD continues the great songs. "They Say It's Wonderful" is a classic pop vocal if there ever was one; and Perry aces "When You Were Sweet Sixteen" as easily as if it were just breathing--but we know it wasn't that easy. Perry's talent and hard work always carried him through. "What'll I Do?" has Perry putting his own stamp on this tune with his great sense of timing and his passionate delivery; and there's also a very fine number when Perry sings "Body And Soul." "Body And Soul" has a gentle type of musical arrangement that makes good use of the strings; and the other reviewer is correct to note that we also get treated to a very rare track entitled "Haunted Heart" on this second CD. "Haunted Heart" has great violins and Perry sings this so sweetly I don't know why we don't get this on other Perry Como CDs. He certainly sings it very well! "I Don't See Me In Your Eyes Anymore" is a song about a love that has faded; but Perry brings out some sparkle even in a song like this using his voice that was such a finely tuned instrument. "Bali Ha'i" is from the musical entitled "South Pacific;" and Perry's rendition is beautifully done. I also enjoy hearing Perry sing "You're Just In Love." The second CD ends the set very nicely with Perry Como singing "If;" "If" is a timeless love song about a love a man has for a woman and that's grand.
Perry Como remains a giant amongst giants. I hope that others will soon remember or discover the genius of Perry Como and his extraordinary ability to perform and make everything he ever sang so memorable. I highly recommend this two CD set for Perry's fans; and people who enjoy music from the 1940s and 1950s in particular will cherish this two CD set.
