When you build up something in your mind -- really imagine it, wish for it -- sometimes, when it actually happens, it doesn't live up to your expectations.
True love is nothing like that.
Especially not for Katherine and Michael, who can't get enough of each other. Their relationship is unique: sincere, intense, and fun all at the same time. Although they haven't been together all that long, they know it's serious. A whole world opens up as young passion and sexuality bloom.
But it's senior year of high school, and there are big changes ahead. Michael and Katherine are destined for another big "first": a decision. Is this the love of a lifetime, or the very beginning of a lifetime of love?

About the author

Judy Blume spent her childhood in Elizabeth, NJ, making up stories inside her head. She has spent her adult years in many places, doing the same thing, only now she writes her stories down on paper. Adults as well as children will recognize such Blume titles as: Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret; Superfudge; Blubber; Just As Long As We're Together; and Forever. She has also written the best-selling novels Wifey; Smart Women; and, Summer Sisters. More than 75 million copies of her books have been sold, and her work has been translated into twenty-six languages.
She receives thousands of letters each month from readers of all ages who share their feelings and
concerns with her.
Judy received a B.S. in education from New York University in 1961, which named her a Distinguished Alumna in 1996, the same year that American Library Association honored her with the Margaret A. Edwards Award for Lifetime Achievement. She has won more than ninety awards, none more important than those coming directly from her youngest readers.
She serves on the boards of the Author's Guild, currently as Vice President; the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, where she sponsors an award for contemporary fiction; and the National Coalition Against Censorship, working to protect intellectual freedom. In Spring 2002, Judy was a spokesperson for the Cheerios "A Book for Every Child" literacy campaign which benefited Reading is Fundamental, America's largest literacy organization. She is also the founder and trustee of The Kids Fund, a charitable and educational foundation.
Judy's first book in the Fudge series, Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, was published in 1972. She is thrilled to be celebrating its 30th Anniversary with the publication of Double Fudge. Just as generations of fans have loved the Fudge books, generations of Judy's family have inspired them. Thirty years ago, Fudge was inspired by her son, Larry, and now Double Fudge was written at the request of her grandson, Elliot.
Judy lives on islands up and down the East Coast with her husband George Cooper. They have three grown children and one grandchild.

It is MUCH more than just a racy book. Judy Blume accurately captured the joy and pain of falling in love and losing it all. But I am viewing it as a 50-something guy with Asperger's, not a neurotypical teenager. Had I read it as a teen, I wouldn't have been able to relate much to the characters. When I was their age, only a few psychiatrists had heard of Asperger's Syndrome; we had no name for people like myself, let alone criteria that spelled out the differences between us and NTs.
But had my parents read it, they probably could have explained that my love relationships would very likely fall apart once my girlfriend and I were geographically separated (move, different schools, etc.) - and that it would be nobody's fault, just what happens to many relationships.
Sound advice for teens of every stripe. And if your kid's an Aspie, let them know that they might be able to tolerate separation for a while; but if their SO is an NT, they won't be able to take it - not while all their friends around them are dating. Just one of the differences, and nothing to blame anybody over.
The male main character is very pushy and doesn’t seem to like consent? Even when the moment is supposed to be tender and loving....he ignores the female main characters wishes? Huge thing I couldn’t get past, I don’t care if “It was 1975!” it was gross and made me super uncomfy.
There is no SUBSTANCE to these characters?!?! I’m so easygoing as a book/show/film watcher I enjoy almost everything but reading this I was honestly bored. It’s shallow, dumb dialouge and seems super misplaced for the teenagers it’s supposed to be representing. Maybe this was puposeful? Either way, I wasn’t hooked. I read this entire book in a few hours and it could have been told in a couple pages, to be honest.
I’ve read (and enjoyed) Blume books in my past but go ahead and skip this one. I understand this might have been a “breakthrough” at the time, but it’s just horribly dated and boring now.
Many of the parents and censors that I read about felt that students reading this book would promote sexual activity. It was pointed out in the New York Times article that just because a kid feels old enough to read about the sexual relationship presented in Forever, does not mean that that child feels old enough to go out and engage in sex themselves. This goes back to the idea that we as adults can predict and understand exactly how a book will affect a specific child. Children will take what they want from books.
This book is a slippery slope because it does contain graphic sexual content. Though I would point out that the sex between Michael and Katherine is ridiculously responsible: Michael doesn’t pressure Katherine, he waits until she is ready, they use condoms, Katherine takes herself to Family Planning and gets on birth control. Though young, they are enter into a mature relationship. Those points alone are enough for me, were I parent, to allow my child to read this book. However, I don’t believe that reading books will convince children to do things that they weren’t already considering. Just as I don’t believe that reading Harry Potter will convince children that magic is real and that there is no God, I don’t believe that reading about sex makes people have sex.
However, I can understand the reaction to this book, especially in light of when it was originally published. Not only were there different standards for the content of books at the time, but there weren’t as many books being published that pushed the limit. Were this book to be published today I don’t believe it would receive as much negative notice.

Judy Blume skillfully and honestly portrays the challenges, experienced by all teens and young adults, of transitioning from holding hands to a relationship with both emotional and sexual responsibility. She informs her readers that a relationship can have real consequences without being condescending towards them.
Even at the age of 28, I was able to relate to this book as I also experienced my first love at 17 going on 18 and am lucky enough to still be with him today.
I think the message of this book is that it's perfectly normal to get swept up in the excitement of your first love and your first time, but be sensible and keep yourself safe. Be responsible.
I will definitely be giving this book to my younger sister, who is 15 years old.
To any parents who are unsure about the appropriateness of this book, my advice would be to read it first yourselves then decide.
This book is intelligent, informative and relatable.
Overall, it was ok.
I am so glad I went back to my childhood and chose this one, although it is short, as a 27 year old woman I loved it and couldn't stop reading it.
I went on to buy a few more of her books and have really enjoyed them all.
It's all about young love and sex.
I hope a sequel comes out.
Thank you to this book for helping me through a tough time!
