When we read about people who accomplish extraordinary physical feats, it's inspiring to see what we are capable of as human beings, but it can be sometimes hard to relate to. Which of us is going to put our bodies through such training and punishment, and for what purpose?
This book, The Forever Swim, is the story of Mexican open water swimmer Antonio Arguelles in his pursuit of completing the Oceans Seven, a grueling series of treacherous open water swims around the world. Antonio fights currents, chilly water, 6 foot waves, stinging jellyfish, injury, self-doubt, and exhaustion to complete these swims that can take a full 24 hour day to finish. It is a story of supreme athletic accomplishment. It is also the story of so much more.
Antonio from a young age had to push and persevere practically every step of his life, to swim, to study, to financially support his family. Every time a door shut, he found a window or created one. This is a story of a life of perseverance, resilience, and commitment. It is a thrilling read, alternating between chapters of Antonio's life growing up in Mexico, studying in the US, and getting into politics, and chapters detailing the swims, each with its own set of challenges and dangers.
While you and I may not ever swim the English Channel, we all face obstacles in our lives. Antonio's story is a testament to human will in the face of any challenge.

I couldn't have chosen a better book to break out of mindless game playing with. (I'm a former voracious reader, stuck on Solitaire). Not only does this tale weave an accurate account of preparation for massive swims, it gives insights into contemporary history and the thinking of the people behind such stories.I finished the book this morning; and just before I fell asleep last night, I smiled at the thought "I'm reading again!" Thank you, Antonio! Your book holds valuable advice (for living - the lens of choice - and swimming - the resources of community as well as personal insights into training). It is all here.

La historia de Antonio es muy interesante, uno no se imagina todo lo que tiene que pasar para poder lograr su sueño de nadar los 7 Mares, sobre todo si uno nunca ha nadado en aguas abiertas. Super recomendable!

Even though I walked the journey of the swims myself, I still found the book very inspiring, both in and out of the water. Great read for all athletes and non-athletes alike. Well done, Antonio!

Antonio takes the reader on a eloquent narrative in his successful quest to achieve the Oceans Seven Swim Series. He weaves his personal life in between his athletic training and actual swims in a way that continually propels the reader forward. He is realistic and personable about the challenges he faced on a daily level and his story builds upon itself to a climax in both arenas. I found myself rooting for Antonio to succeed in his swims and he doesn't disappoint. This is a wonderful read for both athlete and arm-chair enthusiasts alike!

The Forever Swim!!! Antonio I loved your book for so many reasons. The way you approach your swims is so inspirational but even more important, at least to me, is your commitment to being a change agent for the betterment of society. Your youthful exuberance and excitement for life and attempting new challenges is refreshing and put a huge smile on my face! Your dedication to youth is impressive and so needed. Thank you! Thank you!!!

This is one the best books I have read in a long time. Both euphoric and heart wrenching at times Antonio is the epitome of Open Water Swimming yet this book also tells his life story and the numerous challenges he has faced and set himself, to achieve his goals both through work and life. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is considering open water swimming, and anyone who thinks "I couldn't do that." Through determination and a strong focus Antonio continues to write the history books. It is also an excellent motivational aid for anyone, swimmer or not! Congratulations Antonio, another achievement you should be very proud of.
