And who is Janika? That soon becomes the main question.
And there were a loads of other questions—many mysteries, twists and turns—developing as I read this story written by Gillie Bowen, loosely based on a real-life story. For more than 20 years following Daniela's scary escape across the Iron Curtain, the couples, Daniela & James and Mary & Michael, the best of friends, live a productive life in Kendal, Daniela forever scared to return to her home land for fear of being arrested, even after the untimely death of her parents in 1973. And then the Iron Curtain came down and 3 years later Czechoslovakia was split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
It was in those last three years, in his travels to Prague for his business, that Michael discovers a secret, a secret very closely related to his best friend's wife, a secret about which she doesn't know.
I very much enjoyed reading Forged Exit, would often find myself picking it back up after putting it down only minutes before. The story was compelling.
