The story is very very in-depth. I had to read a little slow in the beginning to make sure I wasn’t missing any details and the plot, but that didn’t deter me. I learned all the major players in the book quickly. Dante, Alaric, Marsala, and all the other benders play pivotal roles in how this story unfolds. It was fast paced and had me on the edge of my seat through most of it. There are quite a few twists that even I wasn’t sure how things would go or that I didn’t even see coming.
I admittedly don’t delve into the supernatural or urban fantasy genre of romance all to often, but when I do and I have the opportunity to read something so masterfully written I question why I don’t do it more often. Ms. Von Haegert created a very detailed world with benders, vampires, humans, angels and I imagine so many more. I am excited to see what happens in the next book.
As noted it is definitely for mature audiences because of the graphic sexual content and violence. So I won't be letting my daughter read it just yet. But I wish I could let her read it (and will when she is ready), because once the story draws you in it's intriguing and different from any other story of this type that I've read before.
The various forces at play in the story blur the lines somewhat, so it is not All Good vs. All Evil but more complex with shades of gray in each character. I found myself having some sympathy for even the darkest characters and was not always happy with the Heroes. I like a story that doesn't have one dimensional people that you have to flesh out a bit and learn more about rather than perfect good guys or horrible bad guys.
I hesitate to give any of the story away so I will simply say that the book starts out with a brief glimpse into long ago and brings you quickly to the present where all is gradually revealed as the story unfolds. The writer brings you literally to Hell and back and you enjoy the trip and look forward to the next one!
After reading her historical romance trilogy, I went in ready to find fault with the new dark fantasy. Nevertheless I was happily surprised. Forged of Fire was just as descriptive as her other work, with fantastic imagery and well developed characters. She continued to offer multiple point of views (a style I am very fond of) and moved at her traditional fast paced action. But, she went much further in this one with the story line and development. This book is full force on the dark fantasy elements. It is not for the faint of heart.
It was a great book!
Fabulous read. Wonderful characters, every last one. I enjoyed every minute spent in the world that was created.
