Editorial Reviews

Double clear vinyl LP pressed at 45rpm. Housed in gatefold jacket. 2023 release. The time is now for Caroline Rose. Their last record, Superstar, was released in 2020. The record was critically acclaimed and positioned Rose as the next big breakthrough in music. Needless to say, the resulting pandemic grinded all momentum to a halt while at the same time throwing Rose's personal life into turmoil. The result of that turmoil is the fuel that fired the creation of their latest album, The Art of Forgetting. With The Art of Forgetting, Rose took on the dual role of writer and producer. The album encapsulates the feeling of experiencing recent memories, having them turn into old ones and then ultimately forgetting those memories altogether. There is a romantic nature within the sonic landscape of this record. Tape effects and loops emulate the feeling of aging while the juxtaposition of modern acoustic-electronic textures, like lo-fi tape next to hi-fi granular synths result in some of their most mature and honest work to date.

I must admit I dont have a lot of female vocalist electronic style music mixed with some pop and rock. That said I'm not sure it is electronic style its just really good music. Its different to most of the music I listen to but its got something and I think part of the joy of Caroline Rose is that its really hard to try and pin her style down to a single genre even just on one album! Its not a great fit as she has some really great "jolly" songs and rockers but the gentler stuff reminds me a bit of John Grant. I think the best thing is to grab your spotify and give the lady a spin, sure you will find something to love!
There isnt a bad song on this LP, there arent lead guitar solos but there are sweeping vocal and keyboard passages that are gorgeous. It glitters with strings and melodic and breathless vocals... mostly, there are a few in yer face and angsty numbers but they are grown up angst.
Stand outs for me are "Love / Lover / Friend", "Everywhere I go I bring the rain". "The Kiss" and I have a very soft spot for "Miami" which echoes like its from Loner but it works here just as well! I am struggling to describe the scope of this album, it just works.
One minor annoyance is that the audiophile LPs are 45 rpm but its not printed on the labels... but that is a really tiny moan!
I first found Caroline Rose on Loner, which BBC comedy viewers will recognise a song used for the theme song to the series "Rain Dogs" (Soul No. 5). Superstar is another great LP.
I would highly recommend discovering Caroline Rose, whatever your mood or need she has a song for it.
