Editorial Reviews

Four years after her last release, Dear, Jenny Whiteley returns with a collection of all-new material. On Forgive and Forget, her third release on Black Hen Music, Whiteley, a two-time Juno Award Winner, has teamed up again with award-winning producer Steve Dawson for their third collaboration. Jenny enlisted the talents of a top-notch list of musicians to back her up, including John Raham (Be Good Tanyas) - drums, Darren Parris (Daniel Powter, Daniel Wesley) - bass, Steve Dawson - guitars, Chris Gestrin (K-OS, Randy Bachman) - keyboards, and bluegrass legend Tim O'Brien (Steve Earle, Mark Knoppfler) - vocals. Forgive or Forget is bursting with authentic touches of country and bluegrass, a nod to Jenny's background in those genres, while remaining firmly in the Americana singer/songwriter tradition.

Jenny started her recording career some years ago by winning a Grammy for her excellent bare-bones self-titled cd that was stripped of excess and her songwriting was there for all to hear. I knew we had a special person right then and there. Since then her folky roots styled music has expanded in sound and instrumentation. Normally, for a guy like me, that would not generate into a good thing however, like I said, her songwriting has always been special and that's what seperates Jenny Whiteley from the majority of her peers. She comes from a family steeped in music but she has been the best of the bunch. Here you'll find Jenny in a pop/folk mood and it all sounds great. This is her 4rth release.

Forgive or Forget is Whiteley's 4th release in nine years, and is a relaxing, easy-on-the-ears folk rock album, led by her smooth vocals, gently rambling acoustic guitar with light percussion, keyboards, mandolin, etc. accompanying. Perhaps this album's most redeeming quality is its subtlety and simplicity - the songs are well-written but remain within a comfort zone, avoiding unnecessary entanglements of complexity. It does not try to be what it's not. These are trouble-free, laid back folk songs evoking a summer breeze, a swaying hammock, an effortless country waltz. Nice stuff.

GENRES: Contemporary Folk, Americana.

BUY IF YOU LIKE: Emmylou Harris, Sarah Harmer, Devon Sproule.

MUST HEAR TRACKS: "Day Without Words," "Final Season," "Ripple Effect," "Cold Kisses."
