Editorial Reviews

Review

"From the first page this book grabbed on and wouldn't let go, I read it over night because I didn't want to put it down. The characters were amazing and very well developed which made this book a pleasure to read." -Book Addict Mumma

"This book was superbly thought out and extremely creative with entwining of a fantasy realm unlike any other, with a modern day real world. The characters were relatable, easy to fall in love with, or even to loathe." -The Reading Vixens

"Allison refuses to be left behind, refuses to leave her mother in the care of any fae who doesn't value human life, and It. Is. Awesome. She is prepared to take no crap, fights back when attacked, and doesn't cower in fear." -Starlight Book Reviews

"I'm not normally a fairy reader, but this book was just so engrossing and entertaining that it changed my mind. And I love that the faeries were not Tinkerbell-esque. The ending was great and I cannot wait to see what happens next!" -Such a Novel Idea Blog

About the Author

USAToday bestselling author Laura Howard lives in New Hampshire with her husband and four children. Her obsession with books began at the age of 6 when she got her first library card. Nancy Drew, Sweet Valley High and other girly novels were routinely devoured in single sittings. Books took a backseat to diapers when she had her first child. It wasn't until the release of a little novel called Twilight, 8 years later, that she rediscovered her love of fiction. Soon after, her own characters began to make themselves known. The Forgotten Ones is her first published novel.

The Forgotten Ones is a well written story that grabs you from the first chapter. I was immediately pulled into Allison's world, and I empathized with her as she molded her life around her mother. I'm not into spoilers so all I will say is: prepare to be whisked away on an adventure into another world along with Allison. The author is very talented and I'm so looking forward to the next installment of this series! Wonderful!!

I have to say that I loved this book!! The setting was flowing and magical. I could completely picture everything as if I was watching a movie in my head. The characters were very lovable! Every page gave a little bit more but also left a bit of mystery to it. I just couldn't put it down! The terminology was a little confusing right at first but quickly became second nature. The only bad thing was that it ended too soon and now I am dying for more!!

This is Author Laura Howard's debut novel and seriously I am in love with her writing!! I can NOT wait for the next book! I don't care what she plans on writing! She has made me a fan of hers forever!! This book is so amazing! It's one of those that speaks so vividly in your mind that you can't help but get lost in! I was entranced by her characters and her story! We are taken into a new world that Laura Howard has dreamed up. Yes, we've read about fairy realms and such, but she has her own originality in this and it was so refreshing!
You will meet Allison. A wonderful young woman who doesn't feel that she has the choice to grow on her own. She is dealing with the burden of always taking care of her schizophrenic mother. She doesn't mind and knows that in order to do so she can't fall in love. Ethan however is very persistent and he is just the cutest thing ever!! On top of HOT of course! In fact, I'm calling dibs on my new book boyfriend!! Hahaha But there are things her mother has seen, there are secrets that have laid hidden for many years and when Allison is thrown into a whole new realm she has to come to terms that there are creatures that exist and they are about to turn her world upside down! She ends up having to fight for those she loves and it's never the end of course!!
This world that we are thrust upon is fascinating and so much fun to get lost in! You want to read this! I give this book my thumbs up!

Reading and Writing Urban Fantasy, Paranormal, and Romance

At A Glance
Fun concept, not so great execution.

The Good
Allison would do almost anything to help her schizophrenic mother. She would turn down a hottie who wants to date her, trust a father she has never known and his crazy stories of the fae, and face any magical creature to save her mother and the ones she loves. The only person Allison forgets to care about is herself.

Though many things bothered me about Allison, I found myself respecting her strength when it came to her mother. She really plans and lives her life to solely take care of her mother. I admired her persistence despite people trying to drag her other directions. I also found Allison being a normal girl (for the most part) pretty refreshing.

But the best part of The Forgotten Ones was the fae (Tuatha de Danaan) aspect. Some were scary as hell and others were just so damn interesting. Most of the fae see us humans as playthings and easily thrown away. Yeah, can you imagine being around beings who think of you as a pet? Creepy! The folklore was well told and made me crave more knowledge about these magical creatures.

The world Howard created was really beautiful. I could easily visualize and even feel what she wrote about. I can see this story get even more complicated and exciting as the series goes on. I'm interested to see where Howard takes us next. The ending was a little bit of a cliffhanger but it didn't bother me.

The Bad
The Forgotten Ones felt very disjointed. The first half read like a contemporary romance and was somewhat slow. The second half was a rush of fantasy and felt forced. There was a good portion of romance in the beginning and almost none after the halfway point.

This is the first time reading this author and it was a recommendation and so glad I opened it up and read it. It has been awhile since I have read a book of this nature one I would consider fantasy genre. It was a refreshing change of pace and this is the first book in this series. One thing for sure authors want to get us hooked start with a series and then you are left panting for more. Through introduction of characters and blending well done of those that come along as you read. Nothing worse than not fully understanding who someone is while reading this genre and how they fit, that has happened a time or two in past reads. I think fantasy probably isn't easy to write and keep someone immersed in the authors idea of it but she has no problem. Starts out with Allison and her mother and the world she doesn't know her mother is locked in just knows she has to be watched and taken care of. She has her cousin and some friends but prefers to be at home. Ethan is one she is especially fond of and as you read more about him yum yum. Strange events start to occur and soon she meets who she comes to know as her father one of the Tuatha de Danaan better known as fairy. She also has disturbing dreams and so fun to read about them and what they come to mean and why she dreams them. You are carried along on quite a adventure with them all and her father wanting to restore her mother to herself but things are not so easy. Time is different there also. Love Allison and her loyalty and bravery and what she is willing to do for family and friends. Of course as you do go on this journey be prepared to be snared into this world and when you have reached last page and see who has escaped and that is it you smack your head and say gotta know more because by then you have fallen in love with them all. Great job in a beginning of what I am sure promises to be a awesome trilogy.
