If likable characters are one of your criteria for a good book, then this one isn't it.
There are some interesting things about the book: It is a first person narrative by Gina Moynahan, a 32 year old, childless, married woman who embarks on an affair with a married man who does have a child....a rather special child, Evie.
The narrative is rambling, contradictory, and doubles back on itself as you hear Gina's side of a story complete with her perceptions and judgments of other people and their motives. These perceptions and judgements change like quicksilver, sometimes within the same sentence.
At times, the narrative is like overhearing one side of a conversation in a coffee shop, or a cellphone conversation of a woman whose time would be better spent on a therapist's couch. Gina is shallow, self-centered, has few scruples, and is motivated by the trappings that money can buy.
The setting is Dublin during the boom time of the early 2000's, heading into the crash of 2008. So money and housing are very important to the story...as are booze, cigarettes, and lust.
And the one thing...actually person...that Gina's story hinges upon is dealt with very peripherally at the beginning and end of her story. And that is Evie, the daughter of Gina's lover, Sean. But this is characteristic of the way Gina deals with life.

The writing is very well done, even if the story is a bit worn and without much plot. Because of the economic boom and bust theme of the book, I can't help wonder if this is a bit of allegorical tale of Ireland.

Winner of the Man Booker Prize, this novel, set in Ireland, was called the "best fiction book of the year" by the Wall Street Journal and "best book of the year" by Vogue. The story of an adulterous affair, it is narrated by the egocentric "other woman" in a poetic stream-of-consciousness style, mostly in flashbacks that jump between then and now, with hints of what is to come. At first, I thought it was the writing that won the praise. I had trouble relating to the narrator - an IT worker in her 30s with, apparently, no moral qualms about acting on the compelling attraction she feels toward a man who has both a wife and a young daughter. But I was intrigued by her writing style. Toward the end of the book, I decided that entire package - the characterizations, relationships, storyline, writing style, moral implications - has earned the praise and awards that have been won by this book. I don't want to say much about it in case someone who reads this will want to read the book, as the enjoyment is in discovery, in the shedding of illusions. It's an extremely interesting book, especially by the time you reach the end.

Anne Enright continues her wistful ,bordering on melancholic view of life.We try to get through to the essence of the narrator Gina as she leaves her marriage to Conor,for a relationship with the enigmatic Sean.Gina
eventually discovers that the one love of Sean'slife is his daughter .
There is the usual suspense as we wonder where the seemingly strange one sided relationship will end. We can feel both sorry for Gina and exasperated at her misguided passion for a man such as Sean. In an abrupt ending we are left hopeful for Gina but at the same time frustrated by a woman's love for such a self centered man as Sean.
Anne Enright is one of my favorite authors. She writes of the Dublin,I love with lyrical language , and a loving insight into both the city and the characters in her story.
Her characters are memorable and true to life.her writing style is fluid ,easy to sail along.highly recommended

This is the second book I've read recently where an important element of the book was the fraught relation between a woman and her lover's daughter by another woman (the other was True by Riikka Pulkkinen). This book is narrated by a 32-year-old Irish woman beginning in Ireland's early 21st century economic boom and ending in its bust. She is married to one man, but drops the spoiler early in the text that in the end she is living with another. Thus the plot, which hinges on how their relationships will develop, is not very tense. She narrates the events of several years in roughly historical order with many flashbacks and slips forward so I was not always sure when I was reading about. This process of spiraling around the plot is marred by empty places and crisscrossing. The text devotes good deal of time to history of her family, but that history never feelingly flows into the main plot. The limitation of this book is the voice and mind of the narrator. She's lively, bouncy, successful in business, horny, drinks too much at times, and is not stupid but not very insightful. The prose is the ordinary conversational style of such a person heightened a little for literary effect. There's nothing wrong with it, but it doesn't do much. There are five characters drawn as fully as it is possible for this narrator to draw them: herself, her lover's daughter, her husband, her sister, and her mother, but all exist only within the limits of her intelligence and insight. For me she brings to life her feelings about her lover, but not his person. Thus, the reader never has a satisfying or intriguing account of why the characters do and feel the things they do: she doesn't know. Certain good authors have dealt with this problem; Huckleberry Finn comes to mind, or solved it by making the narrator a minor character who has the perspective the protagonist lacks; The Great Gatsby comes to mind, but Enright seems satisfied to sacrifice resonance for immediacy.

Brilliant and very unjustly negatively reviewed here. I think the reason for so many dismissive reviews is the raw, honest and uncomfortable issues being explored - lot of hypocrisy out there. I liked the main character, Gina, a lot.

This is a compelling story about an adulterous relationship that is well above the norm. Intelligent and cleverly constructed, the baggage people bring to an affair, the reasons why they do what they do, very clearly dramatised.

I had NO TROUBLE understading the narrator (who is also married) and I thought the characterisation of the married man she falls for was incredibly accurate and real.

This is quite a dark book, written in the first person. The darkness should not be a surprise to those who may have read previous work by Ms. Enright e.g. The Gathering. The novel is contemporary, set entirely in Dublin. However, the location is of little relevance as sense of geographic location - apart from an obviously urban one - is not of importance.
The book centres around the principal female character, her drifting into and distancing marriage and her affair with a man who is already married with a small daughter.
Many of the characters are well drawn. As the book progresses we get good sketches of the main character's mother and the relationships between mother and daughter, as well as with her long-departed father and her sister.
The attraction to the other man appears to be due to 'chemistry'. He does not come across as someone attractive in any great sense and he is penciled as an adjunct to the story-teller's experience rather than as a well-developed character in himself. His own marriage is seen as in a collapsed state, with his wife and himself living on different planes that rarely intersect. His young daughter suffered some form of accident when small and there is a shroud of physical or mental unwellness created very well. This lingers long over the story and is developed to a satisfactory degree at a later stage - as is the interaction between the girl and her father's new partner (the woman telling the story).
The story reads as if written by a man - there is little of the 'softer' sense that one can find in writings by female authors. Perhaps this is some middle-aged male bias. However, I feel it does render the female lead rather cold, or at least cool, and not immensely likable. Then again, if you read Ms. Enright you are familiar with her style and her capacity to write well. There is a sense of this being a strong, well-written book, with good 'quality' of language and a strong story line. Everyone does not live happily ever-after. In fact, I kept calling it The Eternal Waltz by mistake - not inappropriate given that the story really does imitate life. That is probably a complinment in itself. I read the book over a few days on holidays and sense that this was a good way to experience it.

The quotes on the book do not fit the story we read. Tender? No. Achingly brilliant? No. It is, however, as the Irish Times put it, "A love story for our times." These emotionally changeable people - I love him, he loves me, well, he did and now maybe he never has...- skate across the surface of a relationship that begins nowhere and goes nowhere. The significance of the child, signaled early on as an important factor, is never fulfilled. If the story had lived up to its first paragraph, this would have been a very different review.
The good thing is the strong sense of place, the economically challenged Ireland where property won't sell, and peole are stalemated by their inability to change where they live and how it affects them.

There is no doubt that this writer is talented and brave---not many could refer to 'whoever thought up Christmas should be shot', and get away with it .However for me this is the problem with this novel. So much talent and anticipation--makes the dreary pedantic bulk so very disappointing. The beginning is great, but not sustained. Nothing much happens really, for me the only really interesting character is Evie daughter of Sean, and she is great--the rest are a bit on the dull side. This is the first and probably the only Anne Enright I'll ever read.

The novel is the narrator's reflection on why things took a certain path in her life - what happened due to circumstance, what happened because of what was said, done, believed or imagined at the time. This is my first Anne Enright book and I want to read more.

Yes, OK - there's no-one very likeable in this story, but that's no reason to give any book fewer stars that if the characters ARE likeable! For me, the problem was this wasn't consistently well written, or consistently convincing. The main relationship was not believable as a great love affair, and many of Gina's (main character) inner musings didn't come across as authentic. At times it was as though Enright was trying too hard to come up with an original metaphor or simile and ended up creating something which made me go 'what?' instead of 'oh, yes!'. I thought the writing was at its best when dealing with Gina's parents, and in the last few pages when she spends the day with Evie. My biggest objection however, is the trick that Enright plays right at the start to draw you in which, whilst beautifully written, is little short of a con, implying some sort of mystery surrounding Evie. If you haven't read this book, let me tell you - there is no mystery surrounding Evie; she has epilepsy (or something similar). Big deal.

There are few writers as gifted as Anne Enright at breathing life into a character's mind and emotions. The narrator of The Forgotten Waltz, Gina, goes back and forth over crucial moments within her key relationships - those with her sister, her parents, her husband, and not least her lover and lover's daughter - piecing together the fragments, and attempting to make sense of it all.
Set around the hedonistic boom years of the Celtic Tiger in Dublin, and later during the post-Tiger hangover, the course and consequences of Gina's affair are made all the more profound. I found this novel hard to put down. The author is witty, engaging, extremely insightful and sharp. In Gina she creates a woman who is deeply flawed, yet utterly compelling.
