Recently I decided to replace my deck doing the work myself. Faced with the task of yanking up the old decking with the mass of nails holding it on, while working standing on the original rafters, I purchased a Duckbill Deck Wrecker and it saved the day!
First, upon opening the package, I was very impressed with its sturdy construction: no corners seemed to be cut in the interest of greater profit for the manufacturer, yet it was reasonably light and easy to handle. Second, the design's flexibility, with its variable angle setting for the prying head (using a removable pin to change the setting) , allowed me to use it even when close to the house or at the deck's outer perimeter and railing. After using an ordinary wrecking bar to loosen the first 2 x 4 plank, from then on I used the Deck Wrecker to remove all the others. In spite of long, serrated construction nails, it took only a couple of hours to completely remove the old decking including removal of the nails from the old planks, and the ease that the rafter-straddling design offered was infectious: my wife wanted to take a stab at it and she, too, was able to pull up some boards. She thought it was "fun"; of course, she only did a few... By the time we were done, we had removed all the planks without any of them broken or split, so a recycling organization would accept the material for re-use, eliminating a bill for disposal of the old materials.
The Deck Wrecker seemed to have a single shortcoming: there was no nail-removal slot on it, but while imagining one, I didn't see how it could be included in the rafter-straddling design, so for that task I used my trusty old-fashioned wrecking bar, but it was harder and more tedious than removal of the decking itself.
For it's modest cost, this labor-saving tool was a great investment and I recommend it to any prospective buyer!
