Forsaking the Call by Lynn McMonigal pulls the reader straight into the story by setting up just such an incident. Joel Hawkins is having a bad experience as a youth pastor. So bad in fact, he walks away from his position and from his God for a very long time. There is no conflict in literature that could be so astounding, or awe-inspiring.
Now, fifteen years later, his wife, Hannah, is in the throes of a high-risk pregnancy, and knows that having this baby puts her life on the line as well as the child's. Although Hannah wants to respect her husband's wishes on a hand's off approach about God and religious matters, she realizes that her heart is seeking a higher plain and she needs God as much as anyone. This does not please Joel, who is trying to leave God and religion somewhere in his past.
But as it sometimes happens, Joel comes face-to-face with his belief system, whether he wants to or not, and the reader hangs on for dear life as God's plan unfolds.
McMonigal has written a wonderfully inspiring story that will make you smile, make you cry, and make you run for your Bible. Her book is peopled by characters that are real and dynamic, and her setting in the NICU of her fictional hospital will make you feel like you are there.
Joel turned his back on God 15 years ago, and has never regretted it. Now his wife is in the midst of an unexpected and very stressful pregnancy. When she turns to prayer and faith to get though, Joel is forced to face his past. Can he put aside his anger at God to give his wife the peace she needs to get through this difficult time?
This is the first book I have read from this author. I am not sure if it is her first book or now but it is not published by a brand name publishing company. I know some people don't like books if they are self-publish, but I think everyone should give this book a try.
It is a small book with a lot of heart. This book flowed really quick for me and I finished it in one day. You could really feel with the characters, when they were sad you were sad, etc.
It had a great message about a man who turned his back on God and trys with all his might not to believe God is real. His struggle hurts not only himself but those around him and he learns that you can never really run from God because he is always there.
Lynn McMonigal wrote believeable characters in a hard situation and done it with great style. I even learned a few things about premature babies in the process. :) She gets 4stars from me.
