I thank other reviewers for commenting on the door opening. I needed a door with the hinge on the right, and your reviews were crucial to the purchase decision, since the photo was wrong. (Apparently a new photo has been put up now.)
You need a heavy table to put this on, or just put it under the bed. (No holes for a cable, though, if you want to tie it to the bedframe...get out your drill.)
Comes with a paper template for bolting it onto a surface. I ordered a heavy-duty nightstand for this purpose, but the safe is so heavy, it deters casual criminals and mischievous types just by the weight (and bulk) alone. Serious criminals will take it (by smashing the nightstand, if necessary), whether bolted on or not. I may bolt it on for that small, extra bit of security, but I might not bother with it.
I keep it from scooting around the table top by putting it on some anti-slip material (look up "Grip It Shelf And Drawer Liner"). That and the weight keeps it from moving--or scratching the surface due to grit underneath--when you bump into the table.
Combination lock is 100% mechanical, so no batteries, and no sensors to deal with. The mechanism feels quite smooth and solid. You can change the combination. This box gives me fast access, and keeps my gun safe from kids and visitors.
I recommend practicing: access of gun, chambering a round, and taking your best stance (for your room's security situation), all in one session--from a lying position, under covers (assuming it's in your bedroom). You want the confidence that comes with knowing you won't fumble the combination when adrenaline kicks in. Do this regularly. The buttons work very smoothly, but a nervous hand could slip off of them, since they aren't recessed.
The only weakness I see is if you have a smart, determined teen. If you look on the internet you can see a list of all the combinations possible. With a little practice you can try all the standard combinations in less than 20 minutes. You can try all possible combinations within 40 minutes. Just be aware.
Overall, a great safe and I would recommend for anyone looking for a daily carry/home defense safe.
The negatives. In order to understand the template and the instructions for installation one needs an advanced degree in mechanical engineering. The instructions repeatedly refer to the handgun safe's model number; however, I was unable to find a model number in the paper work or on the safe itself. At any rate there are four holes on the bottom of the safe, and I assume that screwing four screws these holes will complete the installation. The directions for resetting and personalizing the combination are even murkier. They allude to "a slide notch in the plate at the opposite end from the bolt assembly." A sketch or some other means of identification of this slide notch would be very helpful. Finally, the directions for resetting and personalizing the combination are printed a very small font which makes the murky directions even more difficult to understand.
Overall, despite some annoyances, I'd give this item four stars.
