Twice, I spent half the day meticulously going through the set up instructions step by step for midi and nothing worked. I couldn't even get the metronome to work. Finally, when I got sound from the metronome I could not get it to lead in before recording starts. During recording I would strike one key and three notes would appear. I couldn't solve that either so I emailed "support" for help. Two weeks later I got my answer from "support" instructing me to read the attached instructions on setting up midi. Unbelievable! Same instructions I just wasted so much time on! This product does not fit my needs. It would have been nice to play a piano piece and print out the score. Not happening with Forte.
I have tried Forte, MagicScore and Finale. Finale is by far the most intuitive to use. What makes Forte hard to use is that it automatically inputs the rests after a note is entered to complete the measure. Then it hard to erase the rests to enter the rest and notes you want to use to complete the measure. And you have to switch between menus to delete something. Also, the ruler when entering the notes is confusing. In finale there is an erase icon. You select what you want to erase (rest, note, articulation, etc.), select it, then erase it. Finale may fill out the measure with rests at the end, but you can easily erase them and enter what you want to finish the measure. After finishing a measure it may add the appropriate rest to complete the measure, but you can easily delete it and input what was intended. For example, you missed an eight note, and Finale put a rest at the end of the measure. I have spent at least 4 hours trying to figure out Forte, and just gave up between going from youtube videos and their help menu. Finale has a must better User Interface. MagicScore seems to have more functionality but the interface is much more garbled than Forte or Finale. I will try it nex to complete a compositiont. As of now, I compose in Finale, export to MagicScore via MusicXML, and play with the virtual Piano on to see the keys played.
