Gojira were always a great band in my opinion, ever since I first heard them about six years ago.

That said, with this newest album, Fortitude, they've absolutely outdone themselves. This album is a genuine masterpiece within modern metal music. They've made an album, that, while distinctly sounding somewhat more radio-friendly than their previous work, also sounds focused, as a single piece of art, in a way that I don't feel they've ever previously accomplished. Not that there's anything wrong with their earlier stuff, but this, wow...

I can honestly say that this is my Metal Album Of The Year 2021, no question. And as someone who listens to everything from Frank Sinatra to Napalm Death, this is, for me, easily one of the most wholeheartedly enjoyable front-to-back albums from the entirety of 2021, regardless of genre, out of everything I've heard, and I've heard a lot.

I can't recommend it highly enough!

Gojira gives us no definitives in their answer. Instead, it’s a masterclass in balance and variance that’s presented here bringing together everything that makes the band such a standout performance. The band wavers between its signature groovy touching-on-industrial riffs, epic choruses, thundering hypnotic instrumental sections and melancholy brooding parts. But it does so this time with an improved feeling for avoiding a song or the album as a whole to overstay its welcome. It’s also more successful in achieving just the right balance in the order of songs on the album. In that sense Fortitude is a more logical successor of L’Enfant Sauvage. It finds a middle ground between the intelligence and force of that album while still bringing back the catchiness and accessibility of Magma

So this is my first Gojira CD, I've read so much about them and figured why not give them a listen. Now overall I don't really dig the "growl" type of singers but with that said I have a fair amount of other CD's with this type of singers and I like them allot. For one example Obscura, I love them. I can deal with the growls because the musicians are fantastic. So with that said I'm not feeling it with Gojira. I've listened straight through once and it didn't really hit me, probably because of all the love I've seen this band get and I set the bar to high. Not saying it's bad, there's clearly a ton of talent and I did dig a handful of the songs, but just wasn't doing back flips. Maybe with a few more listens I might feel differently, but for now I'm kinda on the fence. Don't beat me up Gojira diehards, it's just one mans opinion!

This Album/CD is GREAT for a Gojira Album/CD.
I will say on all of their albums I LOVE 60% and get through 40%. This one I love 80%. The Production is GREAT! The segments of 'noise' are slimmed way down. The Vision is intact and the Drumming is amazing!
They are onto something here. Has a feel of Sepultura's 'Roots' in terms of making a statement or being aware in terms of Culture and ideology if that's their direction now. Yes, Gojira are beyond 'Roots', but the spirit is there. I truly appreciate their vision and thoughts that go beyond METAL!
This CD is a great progression from 'Magma', but also more accessible. But don't let that word be a hindrance. 'Magma' was just as accessible yet les focused. This is better.
This is no sell-out. On the complete cusp of brilliance. But they still have a track or 2 that aren't perfect. So it gets a 4, but I am also raising the bar pretty high for a band I have liked for a long time.

On le sait depuis quelques années, Gojira est le meilleur groupe de metal français mais il est aussi sans doute un des meilleurs au monde (l'accueil que les Etats-Unis leur réservent ne trompe pas). Et là, la bande des frères Duplantier cogne vraiment fort. Derrière les musiques très puissantes, voire violentes, il y a de vraies mélodies (New found ou The Chant assez irrésistibles par exemple) et un vrai message de défense de la Nature et des ressources de la planète, une cause dans laquelle le groupe est engagé avec force et lucidité depuis longtemps, appelant ses fans à se mobiliser et à se battre pour la sauvegarde des derniers peuples de la forêt amazonienne. Bien sûr, on sent comme un hommage évident à Sepultura: Amazonia rappelle Roots des frères Cavalera (tiens, une autre fratrie, très engagée dans les luttes sociales et environnementales!), grâce à l'utilisation d'instruments traditionnels sur des rythmiques d'enfer, même si rendre hommage à ce groupe mythique du thrash metal n'était pas le but de départ des Duplantier, ils y ont réussi et de belle manière! Les ambiances sont variées et je pense que cet album peut être écouté par quelqu'un qui ne serait pas fan de musiques extrêmes (Hold On, Fortitude...) comme Roots pouvait l'être dans les années 90, à la condition d'avoir les oreilles bien ouvertes évidemment. Ca joue de façon fabuleuse et ça vous embarque loin, les guitares de Joe et Christian sont tranchantes comme des rasoirs, la batterie-marteau piqueur de Mario est ahurissante, la basse de Jean-Michel est lourde comme il faut, ce qui n'empêche pas les musiciens d'être inventifs. Alors oui, on tient peut-être là le meilleur album de Gojira, un des meilleurs albums metal de l'année et pourquoi pas l'imaginer dans le classement des meilleurs albums de metal de la décennie (voire toutes périodes confondues!)? On se dit que quand on sera sorti de cette période compliquée, ce serait fabuleux d'entendre ces morceaux dans des stades car ils sont sans doute capables de soulever des foules entières, j'imagine parfaitement les choeurs de Fortitude repris par tout un stade! Mais attention, aucune concession pour autant: la musique des Duplantier reste d'une puissance assez hallucinante et vraiment sincère!

Jetzt mal wieder Frankreich. Und wie bei jeder Einschätzung von mir muss kurz das ein oder andere geographische geklärt werden. Polen kenne ich jetzt nahezu komplett, und das, obwohl ich erst zweimal da war. Mit Island und Altenessen Süd verhält es sich ähnlich. Die vielen geilen Bands führen mich regelmäßig zu Google Earth. Frankreich ist Metal-technisch eigentlich erst seit ein paar Jahren auf der ganz großen Karte angekommen und das vor allem ebenfalls aufgrund der dortigen Black Metal Szene. Und auch wenn der französische Einfluss auf den weltweiten Hartholz-Sound in den 1980er, 1990er und zur Jahrtausendwende im Gegensatz zu Skandinavien, Amerika und auch Deutschland mutmaßlich eher gering ausfiel, unter der Drapeau Tricolore fanden sich immer schon Perlen wieder. Oft in oder um Paris herum. Aber gern auch überall in La France verteilt. Dies führte mir auch das Legacy Frankreich Special neulich wieder schonungslos vor Augen. Und zwar auch ohne Black Metal. Massacra, Svart Crown, Supuration, Killers, Hacride, Black Bomb A, Loudblast.....und und und.

Richtig gefeiert habe ich auch immer Gojira, ich halte sie bis heute für eine der besten Live-Bands aller Metal-Zeiten. Ihre Alben, von ‚From Mars To Sirius’ bis ‚Magma’ funktionierten wie ein Uhrwerk, präzise, geölt und mit dem besonderen Effekt, wenn man mit dem Kopf reingerät. Mit einer unbändigen Wut und Aggression, technisch hoch versiert und dennoch auf eine Art reduziert und minimalistisch, progressiv und geradeaus, ballerten die Mannen aus Bayonne, im Département Pyrénées-Atlantiques in der Region Nouvelle-Aquitaine ihren Sound in die Lauscher der geneigten Hörer_Innen. Und jetzt, ganze fünf Jahre nach dem letzten Output ‚Magma‘ meldet sich Gojira zurück. Also los jetzt.

‚Born For One Thing‘ als Einheizer startet fulminant und erinnert mich sehr an Meshuggah, Tool, ein bisschen Devin Townsend und in einem Part an Slayer (ach was, das ist ein geklautes Riff, Mann). Das Teil hat aber die bekannte und geliebte leicht entrückte und psychedelische Gojira Note.

Apropos psychedelisch, ‚Amazonia‘ mit seinem Maultrommel-Introducing leitet anschließend ziemlich entzückt ein schleppendes und durch viel Hall gekennzeichnetes Stück ein, welches im weiteren Verlauf sogar einen tribaligen 70s Charme versprüht. Guter Track, ob es aber wirklich der richtige war, der sich ob der Thematik als Vorabauskopplung anbot wag ich nach wie vor zu bezweifeln. Ich hoffe aber natürlich, dass der gute Zweck zu einem hohen Spendenaufkommen führte.

‚Another World‘ beginnt mit einem leicht an ‚Oroborus‘ erinnernden Gitarren-Part, baut sich anschließend aber nicht zu diesem Masse-Monster auf, sondern verliert sich meiner Meinung sogar ein wenig in einen für mich fast nichtssagenden und poppigen und langweilig percussiven Teil, mit einer zu glattpolierten Hook und viel zu viel Keyboards. Muss man mögen, ich tu dies eher seltener. Rezensionen feiern den Tune. Wie man‘s mag. Eben.

Wo ich gerade bei poppig bin, ‚Hold On‘ eröffnet mit diesem Adjektiv am ehesten beschrieben. Hmmm. Komisch, was denn mit den Franzosen los? Denke ich. Bevor ein ziemlich fettes Riff den Beginn des Stückes zu einem Intro werden lässt. Auch hier gibt es weit deutlicher Reminiszenzen an die 70er, als man es jemals zuvor von Gojira hörte. Teilweise erinnert mich auf vielen Stücken auf der Scheibe einiges jetzt auch an Bands wie späte Opeth.

‚New Found‘ dann auf eine Art nur Gojira. Irgendwie ein bisschen ‚Magma‘, eine Prise ‚L‘Enfant Sauvage‘, aber eben jetzt auch der neue Weg, Gojira anno 2021. Glatter, anders minimalistisch, stampfender, reifer und weniger ungestüm. Und das soll kein Diss sein.

Der Titeltrack dann eher ein Skid mit Langerfeuergeknistern, der direkt zu ‚The Chant‘ gleitet. Die Flamme lodert weiter. Entspannter Track, mit langen Haaren, Stirnband, dicker Wundertüte und Lambrusco aus‘m Tetra-Pack. Nice. Ich mag Pink Floyd.

‚Sphinx‘ zieht das Tempo und die Härte an und rutscht Gojira-typisch übers Gitarren-Griffbrett. Geile Riffs, dick drückende Drums, geiler Metal-Track.

‚Into The Storm‘ mein absolutes Fave auf der Platte. Und zwar von Beginn an. Großartigsten 5 Minuten. Schönes Stakkato-Riffing, raffiniertes Songwriting und eine tolle (und poppige) Öffnung hin zum Refrain. Um dann wieder in ein ziemlich progressives und Meshuggah-lastiges Feuerwerk zu überführen. Auch hier verbindet sich die alte und hochgeschätzte Dampframme mit der Feststellung, dass die Zeit nie still steht. Auch nicht in Frankreich. Großartig.

‚The Trails‘ dann ebenfalls ein weiteres Highlight und ein Gänsehaut-Tune vor dem Herren. Was denn hier eigentlich los? Reduziert, warm, schönes Palm Muting, nice groovige Rhythmus-Streicheleinheiten und sehr geile cleane Vocals. Erinnert ein wenig an die Melancholie wie sie Bands wie Leprous verbreitet.

‚Grind‘ verabschiedet sich dann noch mal gebührend mit einer Härte a la ‚The Way Of All Flesh‘. Gib ihm!

Und dann ist Ende. Mit cleanen Gitarren. Ausblendung. Schicht. Thekenschluss. Aus die Maus.

Uffffff.

Ok. Also viele Reviews und ne Menge Rezensenten halten ‚Fortitude’ für eine göttliche Offenbarung und überschlagen sich förmlich. Ich bleib auf dem Teppich und hörte lediglich ein gutes bis sehr gutes Album. Nicht mehr, aber auch nicht weniger. ‚Magma‘ kündigte es bereits an. Die Zeit der vollen Bemettung und das Gefühl pressluftgehämmert worden zu sein, ist vorbei. Und das ist auch gut. Hatten wir ja alles schon. Und außer Kerry King tätowieren sich ja auch nur wenige Leute erst mit 50 Jahren den Schädel. Eher wird für die Laser-Einheit gespart. Ich mag den 70s Einschlag, die Verbindung des Alten mit dem Neuen. Ich mag die Entwicklung der Band, deren Akzeptanz für den Lauf der Dinge und das Alter. Ich kann sogar den Nu Metal Einschüben etwas abgewinnen. Aber grandios sind andere Alben von Gojira. Vielleicht liegt das ja auch nur an meinen momentanen Hörgewohnheiten. Schwarze, äußerst düstere und melancholische Tonarchitektur liegt mir. Es ist also gut möglich, dass ich ‚Fortitude‘ in ein paar Jahren, mit einem dann anderen Ohr, auch atemberaubend finde. Nach dreimaligem Durchhören gibt‘s dann jetzt 3,5 von 5 klischeegeladenen Gitanes ohne Filter mit Maispapier, kurz vor dem Aufstehen.
