That's the biggest problem, and the only problem I've seen so far, can't carry enough resources and the lack of important ones. Which is huge in a game about leveling funding loot and building forts.
Fun to play when you get to, not fun just speed running to get one resource.
Let's hope for some changes before this gets put in my discard pile.
Fortnite is fun with 3 other friends.
The Storm Shield defense missions is where it shines.
Enemies are varied and fun to fight.
Story Quests, Daily Quests, Side Quests, Challenge Quests, Storm Shield Defense, lots to do.
The game drops you in with little information about the menus. This is a good and bad thing, why didn't they just remove the extra menu options until the player finished a quest unlocking it and explaining it at that time?
Zone 2 feels dry and lacking compared to Zone 1. Zone 3 is unfinished. Zone 4 is unfinished.
You have to grind like there's no tomorrow. EVERYTHING needs resources so you play multiple missions just to gather resources so you can do a fun mission. Feels like a chore that could be made easier if allowed to gather resources past the limit of 999 and small beginning backpack space.
Loot llamas that want your hard earned money.
Don't pay for it now and wait for a free release next year.
Around the second "Stage" progression comes to a grinding halt that renders the game unsatisfying and reminiscent of a pyramid scheme.
To be fair the first stage of the game is fun and is modeled to get you hooked just like a crack dealer then everything will come to a sudden stop and all but demand additional payment for you to progress through the game.
I strongly suggest that you wait for this game to be free to play and not be an idiot like my friends and I.
This leads to the next issue that is the llamas content being completely unpredictable. It is basically a slot machine that grants you on average 5 random items (though sometimes more) that may or may not be anything you want. As of now, there is no way to purchase specific heroes or weapons/traps you want. You have to rely on a llama randomly dropping the specific thing you want, but this is highly unlikely. There are tons of items in the game and their level of rarity which dictates the maximum level they can be upgraded to means various tiers of basically the same item are included in this roulette of loot. High rarity weapons, heroes and weapon/trap schematics have lower drop rates (probability to be won ). This creates a loop in the game that if you are completing the daily missions every day, no matter how much more time you sink into the game your still only getting one spin every day or every two days to get one llama. The only alternative in place of this is to pay money to get more llamas.
This wouldn’t be nearly as aggressive if your common place items could feasibly be leveled up to be comparable to the more rare counterparts. Again, though the games monetization rears its head. To level up every hero, weapon, trap and survivor in the game you need experience points. These points are granted in limited quantities for successful missions and story progression, but the most time effective way to earn experience is by retiring unwanted items in each specific category. Each time you level up a time to increase its stats the cost to do so again rises. At higher levels, you needed thousands of experience to raise an item a single level and when missions only grant sums of around 500 exp of one particular variety (hero, weapon, survivor) it becomes a grind. The alternative? You guessed it, you buy llamas and retire all of the unwanted items you receive. Lastly so many systems in the game feel needlessly tacked on to add unfulfilling bloat to the number of items that a loot llama can drop. This drives up the scarcity of items players really want and incentivizes buying more llamas. The shame of it all is the game at its core is allot of fun and charming in its presentation. It will become free to play sometime in 2018 and if you choose to buy one of these early access bundles you receive a few guaranteed items and a set amount of llamas.
Epic games is very much aware of how unrewarding the game feels and how players despise the dependency on llamas and have been apparently told this repeatedly since the game was in alpha testing, but haven’t addressed it. Read the games official forums or sub reddit and its inundated with complaints on this issue, but they have as of now shown no signs of addressing it. This is not business practices of a company that values its customers or wishes to see its game thrive in the long term. As it stands, unless some changes are made to real in the overzealous monetization this game is little more than allot of potential thrown away to create a glorified slot machine. I will update this review if Epic games decides to actually address the biggest issues with the game, but I don’t foresee this happening in the immediate future. Maybe after the game leaves early access and is abandoned by most of its player base, but by then it may or may not be enough to bring back players.
Don’t buy this game. It is a fun game ruined by a monetization system that’s as bad as many games you would play for free on your iphone. The company is well aware and as of now would rather ignore the long-term success of the game in favor of a quick surge in profits. If it changes I will update, if not you can expect the game to swell when its released for free to play and quickly die when people realize it’s a scam.
