When I open a coloring book and see roughly 72,000,000,000 teeny tiny spaces, I'm just a bit daunted. But I don't want some kind of Hello Kitty design with one huge figure needing three colors. So I'm always on the lookout for a design or --dare I hope for it?-- a book that inspires me.
Straight away, the images in Jennevieve Schlemmer's book, Fortuna, arrested me with their simplicity and accessibility. Unlike many books, which might be organized as groups of mandalas or mosaics or flora, Schlemmer's book begins with a welcome, and a map. Each deceptively simple page is another destination in the journey through water, trees, castles, and more!
What I most appreciate so far in my own journey through Fortuna is the creativity each page inspires. Large spaces encourage shading, whereas smaller details (that I can actually distinguish! And color!!) encourage color play. As with the best literature, I keep going back for more, getting drawn in... While
Simultaneously not wanting the experience to end.
This may be an adult coloring book but I think it would be enjoyed by people of all ages.
