My son had to keep informing me of what was happening in the story.
They really enjoyed it, it's a quick read, and kept them off the internet and game consoles.
And that's all that matters.
Fortunately the Milk is about what happens when a dad is allowed to go fetch the milk for the morning cereal and, if left unattended, all the wonderful mischief he can get into.
This book has everything from pirates to hot air balloon (sorry, Floaty-Ball-Person-Carrier) manned by a Stegosaurus to green mucus aliens to volcano gods and even to piranhas. Through it all, our brave parental unit keeps tight hold of the milk, but is it possible to keep the milk safe when it might just be the only thing between life and the complete destruction of the universe?
I found Fortunately the Milk to be witty, fantastical and just a little bit mad, in the best sense of the word. The illustrations are the perfect accompaniment to such a madcap adventure. This is a story that will appeal to both the young and the young at heart.
Why haven't I read anything by this author before? He's brilliant. I have completely missed out on his other books and I feel rather idiotic for not recognizing his name when Fortunately, the Milk came out.
I need to write Mr. Gaiman a letter declaring my undying love for his latest book. This is the kind of story that childhood is made of. It is an imaginative, nutty adventure of time travel and narrow escapes, all to save the milk. It is wacky and wonderful. I can't wait to read other books by this author. My love of the book is solidified in Skottie Young's amazing artwork. I can't get over his brilliance with a pen and ink. His characters have so much life to them! The pictures take the story to the next level.
This is a must have for a child's library. Highly recommended for ages 7 and up.
I read this book aloud to a carful of people who all ended up listening, whether or not they'd intended to. By the end, everyone was laughing--me, the kids, the kids' parents, and our cousin who had come along for the trip.
As soon as I finished the final words, the kids begged for it to be read again.
That's how I ended up reading a book aloud, twice in a row, on a car trip, and having more fun than should probably be allowed.
FORTUNATELY, THE MILK is fun, light-hearted, full of absurd British humor, and deeply sweet -- all about a father's love for his children (and his flair for creative storytelling). Read it. I don't care if you're grown. Read it anyway.
My daughter, eagerly took her turn reading it. She's now read it three times and loves it. She's reading "The Graveyard Book" during her personal reading time and adores that too.
This is a great read aloud book, or a great cuddle up and read to yourself book. The family is beautiful, the plot is fun and engaging, the illustrations are wonderful, the book is quite worth buying. It's very creative and engaging from start to finish. Invest in the hardback copy, it will be well-read in your household too.
We are about half-way through. If our opinion changes we'll let you know.
Oh, yeah - our children would have adored this book when they were younger, and we would have loved reading it to them. However this would be one of those that we read for a while then set down for more reading later, only to have them pick it up and finish it. Then, we'd have made them read to us. Now that they are grown up, they have to wait until we are finished.
After I bought this from Amazon (she initially read it as a library book), she immediately started reading it again. After she was asleep, I started reading it, and I have to agree with her assessment.
This is a lovely book. The characters' voices come through very well. (My daughter told me that you could tell they were English because they called their mother "Mum.") And, there are lots of great illustrations. (Another important factor for a 3rd/4th grader!)
I bought several of Gaiman's other children's books because this one was so great!!

Total, utter nonsense.
As in, time-travel-alien-dinosaur-adventure-romp-all-to-get-some-milk nonsense.
still love 'the graveyard book' best of his children's genre.
