Forward: Notes on the Future of Our Democracy Hardcover – October 5, 2021
Purchase options and add-ons
“A vitally important book.”—Mark Cuban
Despite being written off by the media, Andrew Yang’s shoestring 2020 presidential campaign—powered by his proposal for a universal basic income of $1,000 a month for all Americans—jolted the political establishment, growing into a massive, diverse movement.
In Forward, Yang reveals that UBI and the threat of job automation are only the beginning, diagnosing how a series of cascading problems within our antiquated systems keeps us stuck in the past—imperiling our democracy at every level. With America’s stagnant institutions failing to keep pace with technological change, we grow more polarized as tech platforms supplant our will while feasting on our data. Yang introduces us to the various “priests of the decline” of America, including politicians whose incentives have become divorced from the people they supposedly serve.
The machinery of American democracy is failing, Yang argues, and we need bold new ideas to rewire it for twenty-first-century problems. Inspired by his experience running for office and as an entrepreneur, and by ideas drawn from leading thinkers, Yang offers a series of solutions, including data rights, ranked-choice voting, and fact-based governance empowered by modern technology, writing that “there is no cavalry”—it’s up to us. This is a powerful and urgent warning that we must step back from the brink and plot a new way forward for our democracy.

Review
“Can there be another political party in the U.S.? Can we find a way past toxic partisanship to a fact-based government? In Forward, Yang does not just give us a laundry list of intractable problems, but shows how we can find solutions if we think in new ways and summon the courage to do so.”—Kara Swisher
“Forward is a vitally important book that shows how entrepreneurial, independent thinking will be the indispensable ingredient to solving our biggest political and economic challenges.”—Mark Cuban
“It’s no wonder that ever since Yang burst onto the scene with a positive movement that spoke directly to the pain Americans are feeling, both parties have been taking his ideas. With Forward, Yang once again proves he is a necessary and powerful voice.”—Van Jones

Democracy By a Thread
Why isn’t it working? That’s a question millions of Americans have been asking about our country. For some time now, many of us have had this growing sense that our way of life and the shared beliefs and expectations that underpin our democracy have become endangered.
We sense that, somewhere along the way, the machinery of our democracy started faltering—and now it is failing.
Politicians tell us to vote and volunteer and endlessly beg us for donations. Many of us do these things. But it’s not doing the trick.
Despite doing all the “right things,” many of us are struggling more than our parents or grandparents did to gain a foothold in the middle class. The digital gadgets in our pockets keep becoming more sophisticated, but our basic ability to distinguish truth from fiction is eroding. We can no longer assume that fundamental functions of American democracy, like the smooth counting of votes on Election Day or the ability of Congress to pass laws, will occur. Some of us have stopped believing in science, while others have simply come to doubt the possibility that brighter days lie ahead. The unprecedented disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic laid our anxieties bare. Unity and consensus seem like fading dreams.
Many of us were surprised and horrified at the ascent of Donald Trump, and yet we sense, on some level, that the aggrieved mistrust and political anger he tapped into were real and will continue to
exist long after he’s gone. As I write this, there is a Democratic majority in D.C. with the slimmest conceivable margins, with Vice President Kamala Harris’s tie-breaking vote in the Senate necessary to get anything done. Democracy hangs by a thread.
How did it come to this?
What happened to our belief in the future?
And, most important, what can we do about it?
I wrote the initial drafts of the chapters that became this book in a feverish stretch in the months following the end of my presidential campaign. I wanted to capture my experiences and what I learned while it was fresh in my mind, and I poured thousands of words a week onto my computer. Even with my presidential campaign over, my sense of urgency remained about the problems we face. Some of these were specific lessons from the campaign trail, like the perverse dance between presidential candidates and the media. Others reflect beliefs I’ve come to hold based on reading, interviews, and working with activists who have spent years trying to sustain our democracy. These initial bits of writing were like a series of mini-essays about the cascading, interrelated set of problems that are growing within our political process and way of governing. Over several drafts, which I completed in early 2021, I shaped these raw writings into proper chapters, stitching them together to form the tapestry of arguments you see here. I hope this book will inspire the same kind of deep reflection in you as my experiences over the past few years inspired in me.
My last book, The War on Normal People, was about the ongoing dehumanization of our economy and the need to adopt universal basic income (UBI) and how it offers us the best chance to evolve to the next stage of capitalism. That is probably how you first heard about me: as the 2020 presidential candidate who wanted to give everyone money.
The War on Normal People had a powerful but narrow goal: to address the crisis in our economy by promoting universal basic income. That book was published in the spring of 2018, just as I was beginning to campaign for the 2020 Democratic nomination. Three and a half years later, I still have the same vision and concerns. If anything, the intervening years have reinforced my convictions about the perilous state of our economy and our democracy. But my perspective on what ails us and my vision for the future have also deepened and advanced based on what I’ve learned running for office. I now have a better sense of the challenges to our democratic process. Some of the warning signs of the health of our democracy are flashing red, while others lie hidden, like a bit of faulty wiring, waiting to blow.
This book reflects these advances in my thinking. Compared with The War on Normal People, the scope here is broader, the insights (I hope) are more nuanced, and yet the ultimate theme remains much the same: our economic and political order is facing unprecedented dangers, many of them brought on by new technologies, and only bold new leadership and policies have a chance to overcome decades of political dysfunction and leaders who are rewarded regardless of whether they rise to the challenge.
I’ve spent the lion’s share of the past four years on the move—talking to Americans, listening to their problems, and, through my organization, Humanity Forward, promoting cash relief and experimenting with it at the local level.
In addition to free money, the other thing you might have heard about me is that I’m a solutions guy. And after thousands of hours spent talking to my fellow citizens and thinking of the future, I have a sense of how we can put ourselves back on the path to prosperity.
This book is the road map. It’s about how to make that vision—and, by extension, any actual lasting change on a national scale—a reality. Not in the abstract, but for real. I’ve found the necessary lever, and I’m eager to share it with you.

About the author

Andrew Yang is an entrepreneur, author, philanthropist, non-profit leader, and former 2020 presidential candidate.
After working as a lawyer and executive at several early-stage technology companies, Andrew eventually became CEO of an education company that became #1 in the country. He then started a national entrepreneurship non-profit, Venture for America, which worked to empower thousands of young entrepreneurs to bring their dynamism to communities across the country, from New Orleans and Baltimore to Denver and Detroit.
Andrew was named a Presidential Ambassador of Entrepreneurship by the White House under the Obama administration and a Champion of Change for his work with Venture for America. Initially dubbed a "longer than long shot" candidate by the New York Times in 2018, Andrew became a top-tier contender for the presidency, raising nearly $40 million in grassroots funding.
With a vision to rewrite the rules of the United States economy through a “Freedom Dividend” of $1,000 a month for every American adult, Andrew became one of the most exciting stories in the 2020 race. Andrew's nationwide support, known as the “Yang Gang,” propelled him to seven Democratic primary debates, outlasting six senators, four governors, three members of congress, two mayors, and one secretary.
Following this unexpected run for president, Andrew formed the non-profit Humanity Forward, successfully lobbying Congress for direct cash relief for struggling American families during the pandemic while simultaneously distributing over $8 million directly to struggling families.
From his presidential and New York mayoral runs, Andrew has seen first-hand what’s preventing our country from getting things done, and he is now directing his energies towards fixing the machinery of our stagnant democracy. With FORWARD: Notes on the Future of Our Democracy, Andrew lays out the case for a variety of democracy reform measures that can unclog the pipes of our system and realign the incentives of legislators with the wellbeing of the American people.

My experience with Andrew on his election journey

- Reviewed in the United States on April 3, 2022I assume most readers like myself try to identify the author’s leaning before reading a political book. In this case while Andrew Yang has run previously as a democrat, his core discussions in this book are absent of bias towards either of the two major parties. His identification of the dysfunction within our political system and proposed solutions I imagine would appeal to the moderates within both parties and the approximately 45% registered independent voters. There are left leaning concepts discussed such as universal basic income, however the core discussion surrounds our flawed electoral system which is vigorously protected by Democrats and Republicans party leadership alike to retain their power.
To clearly signal the prevalent failures in our current political system problem, the author shares voter data indicating the approval rating for Congress Is approximately 20%, yet the re-election rate for members of Congress is 94%. The shocking re-election rate is driven by the fact that 80% of primaries are uncontested. The author clearly and succinctly demonstrates that the primary cause for this failure is the electoral system, and more specifically, closed primaries and the plural voting methods instituted in most all local, state, and federal elections.
He also identifies other social, journalistic, and technological challenges influencing the current sociopolitical environment.
Mr. Yang does great work explaining the challenges and the proposed solutions for each of the issues. While all the solutions were interesting and compelling many seem to represent wishful thinking and not yet ready for prime time or real implementation based on the current political environment.
However, I find Mr. Yang’s contention that the closed primary system is the most glaring culprit for dysfunction and his proposed pragmatic solution for change rather compelling.
Many agree with his conclusion that closed primaries allow the two major political parties and their fringe extreme elements to dominate and pre-select victors in primary elections. In-turn as 80% of general elections are pre-destined due to demographics, gerrymandering etc. whomever wins the primary wins the general election four times out of five. Typically, most primary voters consist of the extreme fringe elements of the two major parties representing only 10-20% of their respective registered voters. Thus, you have a very small population of extremists on both sends electing our representatives. It follows that these representatives will pander to the extremists in both parties and thus the failure for our elected to leaders to compromise in a bi-partisan fashion to address the multitude of challenges facing our nation.
I find the message in this book symbolizes the swell of independents and the moderates in both parties who are fed up with the current electoral system and are beginning to mobilize for change.
The primary electoral solutions presented by Mr Yang, Ranked Choice voting inclusive of open primaries are aligned with many groups acting for change including the Forward Party, Institute for Innovation, and Represent Us. If you enjoyed this book I would also recommend, The Politics Industry by Gehl and Porter.
I have characterized myself as a center leaning Republican for over 35 years. As the result of events over the past six years I have become disenchanted with the republican party and more so with the two-party system. I am seeking ways to support centric and effective government which brought me to this title.
Something must change if America is to effectively provide for the well-being of our people and remain a global leader. I feel Mr. Yang has proposed a simple (but not easy) viable solution for the approximately 60-80% of Americans who fall in the middle to win back our government from the extremists on both sides and once again establish a government by the people and for the people.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2021In 2018, I joined Andrew Yang's presidential campaign team as the sixth employee of a team that would grow to more than 300. For Asian Americans in the United States, Andrew Yang has opened up the ascent path for us all on the thorny road of politics. And though it may take three or five years before most people appreciate Andrew’s work, reading his new book Forward, only confirmed my belief that Andrew has what it takes to bring new life into America’s political system.
In terms of the political spectrum, Yang Gang has always come from left, right, center, and everywhere in between. Having lived in the entrepreneurial wonderland of Silicon Valley for 30 years, I’ve seen business fairytales come and go, but Andrew Yang created a fairy tale in American politics. I was lucky enough to become his “three-dynasty veteran'' by going through the presidential election with him, working with Humanity Forward and aiding his campaign for mayor of New York. The utopian ideal based on reality is the spiritual pillar of my three years following Andrew Yang. I hope that we will all become the propellers of social progress.
My work for Andrew focused on fundraising. I always believe that "where is the money, where is the heart", and everything else is floating clouds. But the most precious wealth I earned in my three years with Andrew was the group of like-minded friends I cultivated along the way. Such friendship will continue and become Andrew Yang's future political wealth and resources.
Forward brought back many memories of campaigning with Andrew from his “crowd surfing” in Los Angeles to riding the subways in New York, I learned from Andrew every step of the way.
Each stage of working with Andrew—presidential campaign, Humanity Forward, and mayoral campaign—came with difficulties. With every venture, I would ask myself whether my effort was worth it or whether, like Sisyphus, I was pushing a boulder to the top of the hill only for it to roll back down again. But seeing Andrew Yang's prepare to push the rock up the mountain for the fourth time, inspires me to keep going.
As the first and second generation Chinese Americans, we can all study the views and positions of this book. A gradual blueprint for political reform has been drawn for us, encouraging us to imagine and to work towards a better future. A new batch of Andrew Yang are just like our Asian next generation. , Andrew Yang is our Asian Obama. The bamboo ceiling has been broken by Andrew Yang. - Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2021I am a fan of ideas and evidence. I enjoy reading Andrew Yang’s books because he weaves public events, facts and figures, and his personal experiences and opinions, into a mix that is entertaining, enlightening and revealing. If you are interested in “outside the box” thinking, you might look to people who were historically excluded from the box.
I emphasize his most important message:
“Much of this book has been about systemic problems and structural fixes. Yet the most important thing we can do to improve our future is the most personal: to extend a sense of grace and tolerance toward the people who disagree with us or who are different from us in some way – even those who attack us. . . . The goal is not to tear each other down but to make each other whole.” (p 274)
Where might some of these sentiments come from? I saw Andrew Yang on television during his presidential campaign tour. I remember when he was asked if he is a Christian. He said no, but his wife is. And they are raising their children as Christians.

This is worth a read for anyone interested in US politics.
Andrew's diagnosis of what ails American government and society is spot-on.
I am not qualified to scrutinise his solutions and proposals which are intended to improve the lives of ordinary people, but one or two of them sounded a little vague to me, although I'm all for them in spirit. I would support most, if not all of them, even if I'm not sure whether or not they would work. But hell, we need to try something different, and I'm grateful to Andrew for sharing his ideas along with a positive message.
I'm particularly enthused with ranked-choice voting and open primaries. That is something for which I would definitely collect signatures. Learning how far behind our government is in terms of technology was also a real eye-opener.
Keep going, Andrew.
