Many of us owners are concerned about what data is actually being sent to these remote servers or viewers.
Please read Foscam's Forum under the thread title of "Foscam Dialing Out to Suspect Hosts". I don't believe Amazon allows posting of urls so I won't post the forum address here. FYI - This is not a weak password problem as many of you have probably heard about.
Please be sure to read the Forum above before purchasing a Foscam camera. Again, the cameras have performed well for me but this security issue is preventing me from purchasing any more cameras for now. Thanks.
This is a problem known by Foscam and has been reported at least under two other threads under different titles.
I received the camera on a Saturday, tech support is not available on weekends. The plug n play part works awesome. Could view it on my phone but could not view remotely or through the software on my computer. I called tech support Monday evening and after an hour of hearing the tech guy belly ache and sigh he finally declares "it works!" IT DID NOT! So I called my isp tech and while he was kind no luck. I called back to Foscam Tech support and this guy was better. He did get the camera working remotely.
My problems where:
Security settings on computer
Not knowing how to check if port was open or not. canyouseeme.org has a check port option and will tell you if your port is open.
There is an excellent youtube video by AwkwardHampster, with the newer cameras you don't have to setup an outside ddns. His video is spot on.
Really like the camera but geez! Tech support needs vast improving.
The latest firmware upgrade has this thing speaking its status changes, which is probably cool for some but not for a baby monitor application. And there doesn't seem to be a way to disable that for this model yet.
All-in-all I'd say this is a great "monitoring" camera and only an OK security camera. I'm using it to monitor pets and I couldn't be happier. During testing of some of the security features though I was a bit disappointed by the devices slow response time.
For example, the motion sensor triggers quickly but the camera takes a few seconds to click a picture. The result is that a casual stroll past the front of the camera will grab a picture of an empty room. This can be mitigated by pulling the camera back 10- 15 feet from the zone you want to monitor but in a small home that may not be an option. The fact that the cord is so short also limits your placement options unless you have the ability to run extension cords.
The camera is also relatively large so hiding or disguising it would be challenging, especially if you want to be able to remotely re-direct it the field of view.
As a "monitoring" camera though this behaves almost flawlessly. I'm currently using mine to monitor my pet's eating schedule. The motion sensor sends me a message when they approach the food bowls and I can then call up the Android app to watch a live feed or snap pictures if I'm inclined.
The motion sensor and IR view would also make it great as a baby monitor for toddlers who like to go on strolls in the middle of the night. The built in alarm and email function will alert you when it picks up motion and can be set up to send an email to your phone.
