Product Description

The Foscam FI9821P is Foscam's first "Plug & Play" camera featuring the ability to connect via smartphone by simply scanning the QR code on the underside of the camera. Bypassing the need to access your router and setup port forwarding, the FI9821P can be set up effortlessly by anyone, even those with very little IT experience. The FI9821P also features 1280 x 720p video resolution, h.264 video compression, built-in DVR via SD card (upto 32gb), two-way audio, Wi-Fi-N capability, pan/tilt, remote internet viewing, motion detection, night-vision as well as network video recording capability. In addition, it is smartphone compatible (iPhone, Android - app required) as well as viewable over the internet using standard browsers on PC (Firefox, IE & Chrome) or Mac (Safari only). The camera functions well as a smartphone baby, pet or elderly parent monitor or as part of a complete home/office security system with remote internet monitoring ability. The FI9821P improves on the FI8910W by adopting high performance media and video processors capable of H.264 video compression which allows for ultra-smooth high definition video transmission, increased FPS and minimal bandwidth consumption. In addition, due to the small file sizes produced by H.264 video compression it has the ability to save tremendous disk space when doing video recording.

First of all I have several of these cameras and have been happy with the performance and reliability. However, many of us owners have discovered that the cameras (newer models) establish connections to servers all over the world without the owners permission. The problem can not be resolved without implementing difficult router port filtering programming that many routers do not support and even then the cameras are still trying to establish remote sessions causing router warning messages of possible network viruses and over utilization of RAM. In essence, you must program advanced port filtering on the router to reject outgoing traffic from the camera so that it can not pass into the internet. This is NOT the way to fix this problem. It needs to be fixed at the source which appears to be the camera. Captures of the outgoing traffic has been provided to Foscam.

Many of us owners are concerned about what data is actually being sent to these remote servers or viewers.

Please read Foscam's Forum under the thread title of "Foscam Dialing Out to Suspect Hosts". I don't believe Amazon allows posting of urls so I won't post the forum address here. FYI - This is not a weak password problem as many of you have probably heard about.

Please be sure to read the Forum above before purchasing a Foscam camera. Again, the cameras have performed well for me but this security issue is preventing me from purchasing any more cameras for now. Thanks.

This is a problem known by Foscam and has been reported at least under two other threads under different titles.

This is not a Foscam. It has no manufacture's name to identify who made the camera. It's a knockoff of Focsam. Don't buy it. It's in Chinese and the language it speaks is in Chinese. It takes a micro SD card not a regular Sd as the Foscam does. This is a fraud. Don't buy it.

If I could give this no stars I would. My husband and I set this up yesterday and it was working great with the iPhone app. We could not, however, access it remotely. This morning I called the Foscam Customer service for technical support. I reached a call center in India and could barely understand the techs. The two techs insisted on accessing my computer and tried to be on my computer while I logged into my Verizon account. Verizon somehow sensed the third party log in and locked me out of my account for 24 hours. The first tech, reading form a manual had me do a hard shut down on the camera at the power source which burned out the camera. The tech support was worse than dealing with Abbot and Costello. Amazon is replacing the camera and this one will go into the trash bin thanks to FosCam Support. Oh, and did I mention they kept me on the phone for three hours?

The quality is not as clear as I would have hoped for a 720p camera. The snapshots are typically blurry and it would be hard to ID someone unless you knew them. The videos are not much better. I have it set to 720P with a bitrate of 4M and they are very pixalated. It does not do well in low light areas like at my front door during the day. The room is dark with sunlight shining in. Only option I found for the video to be effective was was to turn on the IR manually. That is still not ideal.

Ok, it gets 4 stars because it's a royal pain to setup. Tech support is not that great either.

I received the camera on a Saturday, tech support is not available on weekends. The plug n play part works awesome. Could view it on my phone but could not view remotely or through the software on my computer. I called tech support Monday evening and after an hour of hearing the tech guy belly ache and sigh he finally declares "it works!" IT DID NOT! So I called my isp tech and while he was kind no luck. I called back to Foscam Tech support and this guy was better. He did get the camera working remotely.

My problems where:
Security settings on computer
Not knowing how to check if port was open or not. canyouseeme.org has a check port option and will tell you if your port is open.

There is an excellent youtube video by AwkwardHampster, with the newer cameras you don't have to setup an outside ddns. His video is spot on.

Really like the camera but geez! Tech support needs vast improving.

tech support is hit-or-miss.
The latest firmware upgrade has this thing speaking its status changes, which is probably cool for some but not for a baby monitor application. And there doesn't seem to be a way to disable that for this model yet.

Right off the bat make sure to update the firmware. It's a pretty straightforward endeavor and it'll fix a few phantom issues that make setting it up tedious.

All-in-all I'd say this is a great "monitoring" camera and only an OK security camera. I'm using it to monitor pets and I couldn't be happier. During testing of some of the security features though I was a bit disappointed by the devices slow response time.

For example, the motion sensor triggers quickly but the camera takes a few seconds to click a picture. The result is that a casual stroll past the front of the camera will grab a picture of an empty room. This can be mitigated by pulling the camera back 10- 15 feet from the zone you want to monitor but in a small home that may not be an option. The fact that the cord is so short also limits your placement options unless you have the ability to run extension cords.

The camera is also relatively large so hiding or disguising it would be challenging, especially if you want to be able to remotely re-direct it the field of view.

As a "monitoring" camera though this behaves almost flawlessly. I'm currently using mine to monitor my pet's eating schedule. The motion sensor sends me a message when they approach the food bowls and I can then call up the Android app to watch a live feed or snap pictures if I'm inclined.

The motion sensor and IR view would also make it great as a baby monitor for toddlers who like to go on strolls in the middle of the night. The built in alarm and email function will alert you when it picks up motion and can be set up to send an email to your phone.
