Great (5x1 - 5 inputs to 1 output) HDMI solution for the price!
5 out of 5 stars
Great (5x1 - 5 inputs to 1 output) HDMI solution for the price!
Very competitively priced, and great value for the functionality it delivers. I've got 2 of these - one I use in my home office (seen in photo) and one I use with my home entertainment system to route HDMI signals from Chromecast, console and Apple TV inputs. Call-out to how the unit works regarding automatic switching: this is built in to recognize, and switch to the newest signal i.e. if you turn on a device, the switcher sees its input signal and automatically switches to the recent device's input (in my home entertainment setup). If you time it right, this saves you having to know which input is what - just power up your TV FIRST, then power up whatever device you want to watch. Otherwise, switching is a breeze - sometimes taking a bit of a lag for the IR signal to register. Line of sight is important, to state the obvious with IR, so make sure your sensor is within clear view of where you will be operating the remote. With as many inputs as this supports, another callout is that you will want to learn what goes where - my household is constantly confused by which input is the PlayStation, vs. the Chromecast, and so on. All-told, great device for the price.

I got this HDMI Switch (Fosmon 5x1 with AC power adapter) because I ran out of HDMI ports on my HDTV. I did a lot of research before buying this. It can be run passively (without the AC power supply) or with the AC power plugged in. In passive mode, the switch gets power from the various devices hooked to it via the HDMI cable. The reviews that I read indicated that passive switches are sometimes unreliable, apparently because some devices send inadequate power through the HDMI cable. As a result, switches with their own AC power supplies tend to be more reliable. That's why I spent the extra few dollars for the version with the AC adapter.

My setup consists of a Dish Hopper Satellite Cable box, a Wii-U gaming system, and a Sony BluRay player. I have the Dish Hopper hooked to Port 1 and the Wii-U hooked to Port 2 (the BluRay player is still connected directly to the TV). When the switch is hooked up this way, Port 1 (the Dish Hopper) is the default port and stays on as long as no other port devices are activated. When I turn the Wii-U console on, it automatically switches over to it (Port 2). When the Wii-U is turned off, it automatically switches back to the Dish Hopper. Works every time like a charm.

Every once in a while, I want to briefly see what's on TV while leaving the Wii-U is still on (like when I pause in the middle of a game level). That's when I use the remote to manually switch over to the Dish Hopper, and then back to the Wii-U (there is also a button on top of the switch for manual operation if you lose the remote). The remote IR sensor that plugs into the switch is small, unobtrusive, and comes with 3M double-stick tape for mounting. I actually attached mine to the underside of my entertainment center where it's totally unnoticeable.

This thing has worked perfectly since it was installed a month ago. If I had to lodge any complaints, they are 1) the remote seems a little flimsy and must be pointed directly at the IR sensor to work, and 2) the switch has a VERY bright blue LED power indicator that can light up a dark room. However, given the the inexpensive price of this switch, I didn't take any stars off for these issues. As far as the bright LED goes, just stick a piece of electrical tape over it if it bothers you.

I haven't tried this switch without the AC adapter, but intend to at some point. It would be nice to not have to power this thing 24/7, but I'm willing to pay for the small increase in my monthly power bill to get 100% reliability of the automatic switching function. I should note that most other HDMI switches (especially passively powered ones) seem to have problems with automatic switching with devices that always send a signal to the TV, even when they're powered off (like the Dish Hopper). However, I can report that this switch has no problem with that as long as the Hopper is plugged into Port 1. I have a feeling that automatic switching might be a problem if you have more than one device that constantly sends a signal to your TV. In that case, you'll probably have no choice but to use the switch manually with either the remote or button.

Well, I may end up lowering my rating, but except for a couple of things it's just about perfect!

I started with the smaller, three port switch that didn't come with a power supply, but like this one can be powered by the HDMI signal, and that works perfectly! There were 3 things I didn't like about the 3 port switch. 1) The I/R detector for the remote is built into the side of the case, while the inputs are on the back, and the output is on front. Meaning that the side of the case needs a clear view of where you're going to sit. In addition, it will need to be on top of everything, unless you have some little nook that can handle all 4 cables going in and out of the case on both sides. REQUIRING that that 'little' nook be at least 1 food wide! So it's going to be ugly if you use the remote. 2) With all those "heavy" HDMI cables, it wants to dance around if any of the wires are disturbed. Which is made worse by the things weight. 3) The thing that I HATE the most: Whenever an HDMI source is turned on, it switches to that port! Meaning, if I'm watching TV or a movie or whatever at night, when my Chromecast decides to randomly reboot, the switch automatically switches to my Chromecast! The worst part is that it happens at anytime from 1:30 AM to 7:00 AM every stinking day!

ANYWAY, the 5 port switch carries over all of those traits, except for the ugly 1' minimum rats nest of HDMI cables being visible. And THAT is because of the IR dongle. Since it's a separate part that plugs into the switch, you don't have to have the side in view. (I've heard it described as the size of a Ping-Pong ball, which is way off. More like a large marble, probably closer to the size of your thumb. As for difficulty placing it, yes, the cable is about 6" long, but it's just a standard 3.5mm stereo connector, so your average stereo headphone extension cable should work if you want to place it far from the switch.

Now the most disappointing part of the 5 port switch is that it has been intermittently heating up so much that it stops working. So I've been forced to return it after less than 2 weeks. Other than that, I've been very happy with it, and plan to reorder one ASAP.

    Flaws:
    1) Too Light
    2) IR cable too short
    3) Auto switches to new signals.
    4) Remote requires a little hand gymnastics before it works.

    Pros:
    1) Works well
    2) External sensor allows flexibility
    3) Remote works well

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally a quality inexpensive switch!
Reviewed in Canada on January 12, 2023
    Color: BlackVerified Purchase
After going through a few different HDMI switches which either had remotes which did not work, external power which didn't work, and/or one or more of the connections hissing or popping constantly, I think I've found a good quality switch with none of the above problems.

Mind you, I've only been using it for a week now but already, it's functioning better than any other switch I've tried. The remote works consistently. The power source seems to supply enough external power to allow the 4 devices hooked up to all work well with no picture issues or popping noises.

I'd thought I might have poor quality cables but they all work with this device. The receiver for the remote is a long wired cable so you can place it in a nice clear, line of sight spot. No more waving the remote around like a nutjob trying to get a connection if the switch itself is hidden behind the tv.

If you have an open port, the switch will auto connect to the next available device. The remote also has a simple up/down selection so if you're like me and either can't see the numbered buttons without glasses or are watching in the dark. It's just as easy to click up or down and cycle through the devices til you get the one you want.

And finally, the price for what you get is a great value. I can't vouch for super high resolution 4K tv's or whatever since my tv is just standard high definition which work well with my low resolution eyeballs. Don't know how much difference it makes with higher end tv's but it certainly was a great buy, so far, for my setup. And for the price, you can’t really go too wrong anyway.

Great switch. My last one (different brand) worked, but had no remote, so you had to get up and switch with a button. This one is great, I can stay put on the couch and switch to various devices. Smart feature is useful as well. Remote looks small and cheapish, but works great so far.
Picture is far superior then my last switch passed through.
HDMI handshaking issues , and poping sounds 2-3 times per movie no longer an issue.
Only issue, and it's only happened once so far, is that switching to channel 1, currently inputting a Satellite box, just gave me a black screen with no sound. I switched back and forth a few times and it automagically fixed itself, and so far hasn't happened since.
Would I recommend this device, For sure!!!!!!!!!
