By James M. Rawley on May 19, 2010
Format: Kindle Edition
This is an excellent introduction to whist strategy (you have to know the rules already).

Whist is Bridge without bidding or a dummy; trumps are selected by turning up the last card, which is by definition the trump suit, and goes into the dealer's hand after the first trick (it can be played to the first trick instead). So a lot of the game is deducing what the other hands hold. Foster shows amazing ways you can deduce the other players' cards in a particular suit after as little as one lead.

Of course this involves rules for what cards to lead from particular combinations, and the first chapters are all about that.

Foster is charmingly dogmatic, almost rough on the reader: "I trust it is no longer necessary for me to remind you that if you read this book without the cards in your hand, you are simply wasting your time." "You may think this [recommended play] is foolish; it is WHIST!" Great fun, and Foster says his leading conventions tested out as superior to "Cavendish"'s; Cavendish was the other expert in the field, a pen name for a team of experts.

There is at least one web site where people play Whist against live opponents. It's easy to find, centered in England. If you can master this book, you could probably play there.
