Technical Details

Product Description

Lens hoods extend and shade the end of lens preventing unwanted light straying into the lens. Since the end of the lens is extended, you get the benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact. Each dedicated lens hood was specifically created to match the specific focal length of the lens it was designed for. Photographers can easily attach the lens hood on the dedicated bayonet mount, and after usage mount the lens hood on the lens in reverse for a compact storage solution.

I lost the hood for my 24-105 so I wanted another one. I just received this one. The plastic is very very cheap. The fit is not that great and require quite a bot of force to lock in place. Since the plastic is so cheap, it feels soft and deforms when you use force to mount it. Will break very easily so I decided to leave it on the lens all the time even for storage. There is no coating inside the hood.
It cost only $5 and definitely you get what you paid for. IMO it is not worth it.

I bought this thinking my Canon lens was coming without a hood and didn't want to pay for the Canon hood which was about $50.00 more. Ended up with a Canon hood and this one. It's a bit more flimsy then the Canon hood and it doesn't mount quite as snug. I think a good blow from the side would probably break it off. Having said that, I just want to keep the sun out and if I need to slug a mugger over the head with my camera I can replace it for $6.00 it looks no different really from the Canon except for Logo printing. I think I'll use it and save my Canon hood from scratches. It's a good alternative for someone trying to save money or wants a spare hood to keep your Canon hood from getting roughed up.

I've purchased a few third-party lens hoods over the years, but this one simply would not lock onto my 24-105 no matter how many attempts I gave it. Not sure what gives, but it simply would not lock on without falling off. Returned it. Too bad Canon charges so much for a replacement hood but at least they FIT.

I purchased the Canon EOS EF 24-105 f/4L on Amazon along with a Hoya 77mm filter and the Fotodiox replacement lens hood. I didn't realize that the Canon lens would ship with a lens hood, so I was pleasantly surprised when it did. I then figured that I could use the Canon OEM lens hood and keep the Fotodiox lens hood as a backup/replacement hood.

After receiving both the Canon lens with OEM lens hood and the Fotodiox aftermarket hood, I compared the two side by side. Dimensionally, they are virtually identical. The only major difference between the two is that Canon hood has a rough, matte black material on the interior of the hood designed to diffuse reflected light, while the Fotodiox hood has a smooth, black plastic finish that could conceivably reflect some errant light into the lens. At a cost of 1/5 the price of the Canon hood, this probably isn't that big of a deal. The big deal, however, is that when I tried to attach the Fotodiox hood to the lens, I found that the threads were not properly manufactured to fit the Canon EOS EF 24-105 f/4L. The Canon hood fit perfectly, but the Fotodiox hood would not attach.

I returned the hood and happily use the Canon OEM hood on the lens.

The product will suffice if you need just the basic protection to prevent glare. The big disparity between the original Canon product and this aftermarket lens hood are as follows:
Pros:
1. Price is much lower
2. Will do the main job of protecting and preventing glare
Cons:
1. Aesthetically, does not have felt in the inner portion thus looks plasticky, cheap (not luxurious)
2. Difficult to mount on reverse mode when stowing away lens or when not in use

I tripped up and bought this hood because it listed as a special deal for the EOS-6D w the 24-105mm lens. The Canon lens actually comes with it's own hood and this is not needed. Not too upset, I should pay better attention to the contents listing. It does work fine and would be a good replacement if the OEM lens hood gets lost, but right now it sits on the shelf.

Material seems fine, however extremely difficult to get on the lens. When it was finally installed it did not have the solid feel as the Canon.lens hood. There was a little movement. Thought I installed it incorrectly and tried again with the same results. I'm still keeping it in case I damage the canon hood. It will get me by until I can order a better replacement.

I purchased this Fotodiox lens hood to replace a mislaid OEM Canon EW-83H hood that came with the lens. It is a perfect fit on my Canon EF 24-105 f4L lens; the bayonet joint twists on and off the lens firmly: no worries that it will come off accidently when you don't want it to. I have to push rather hard to get the lens with this hood on it, in and out of the camera pack (it is a tight fit), and it has never popped off by itself. The plastic that it is made of feels slightly flexible, but it feels strong enough to withstand any normal amount of force you might use, short of actual abuse, to attach and remove it from the lens. For $6.00, even if it cracked and broke after a year or two, I would be satisfied that I had gotten my money's worth. As a lens hood, it seems to function as it should: I have shot many photos at 24mm focal length (maximum wide angle), and have seen no vignetting. Of course you do need to remove the hood if shooting wide angle with the typical DSLR camera's built-in flash, to avoid shadowing, but that is true also for the official Canon hood and is not a defect in this product. Highly recommended as a spare or replacement lens hood.
