FYI: Quite hard to mount this product on a DSLR camera (I used duct tape). However, it is a great lens if you want all of your pictures to turn out solid black.
So you can drink from it . . . but only in certain conditions. One of those conditions is not the car. There is no slot to sip the beverage through the lid--it's completely closed. This means making hot coffee and drinking it in the car during the morning rush hour is not an option. And for those of us with 45-50 minute commutes, that means drinking the coffee once you get to work. Well, that works fine with my other coffee thermos--the Oxo brand (which is great), but not this. The coffee is barely lukewarm after 50 minutes. And since it has metal, I can't microwave it.
So I guess I could drink out of this around the house on the weekends, but I already have coffee mugs for that. Bottom line is, I see this being functional only if I am taking coffee with me out of the home, but have less than 20 minutes to go--that's when this coffee starts to drop to undesirably moderate temperatures. I would have given this 3 stars if it had a sipping hole in the lid, enabling me to drink in the car, but without that feature, it's hard to see this product as having much utility.
The best sub-$20 coffee thermos I've been able to find is by OXO, this one: http://www.amazon.com/OXO-Grips-LiquiSeal-Travel-Stainless/dp/B0001YH1LG
I recommend that instead of this Fotodiox if you are interested in utility.
The lid will hold liquids without spilling when it is laid or knocked sideways while liquid is in it. This was a surprise to me since most travel mugs will leak at this point. (Or maybe I've been lucky with this mug.)
The cup is surprising stable for a small base on a flat surface. Haven't tried it in the car yet.
I don't use a dishwasher, but someone else pointed out how water will get into the base when washed in a dishwasher. The base does unscrew.
I would have like to see a larger solid base. (Maybe flipping the design over more as a thermos.) Otherwise, the mug is great.
The gold box looks like one that a lens comes in.
The detail on the cup does look like a lens
It doesn't say Nikon anywhere on this product
The inside of the cup smells like chemicals
The intended recipient is a Nikon enthusiast and it's definitely a novel item so we still plan to give it to him and if nothing else he will get a kick out of it and maybe put pens an pencils in it if he can't drink from it. I still would have preferred to get one that says Nikon as the product description states. If they make another version it would be nice if the lid were a sipper. As it is you have to remove the lid entirely to use the cup.
I couldn't think of anything better for our photographer as a gift. Turns out, it is EXACTLY the same model as his actual Nikon lens.
It was definitely the most talked about gift of the day. VERY life like, when they are next to each other, the only difference is the height difference. The cup is slightly taller because if the cap.
The ONLY change I would suggest is the cap. I would have liked to remove the top of this cup the same way you remove an actual lens cap but this cup is a screw on top.
