Editorial Reviews
Review
"This slick volume is full of compulsively readable and downright perverted nuggets."
Time Out Chicago
"[A] hilarious treat."
Los Angeles Times
"A deeply thoughtful compendium of literary pieces. Leave it to the folks at McSweeney's to tap Apatow's Updike-ian erudition. It speaks remarkably well of him that he esteems the delicate humor of such intricately crafted pieces as Raymond Carver's 'Elephant' and Flannery O'Connor's 'Good Country People.' It speaks even better of him that the profits from his book which mixes these subtle humor pieces with more flat-out funny stuff from Philip Roth, David Sedaris, Steve Martin, Nora Ephron and Jonathan Ames, among many others go to 826 National, the organization committed to promoting creative writing among students age 6 to 18."

Apatow, the comedy zen master, has collected a range of writing that is at times funny and at other times absurd. Little-known-gems such as Conan O'Bien's "Lookwell" television show pilot (which is a must read for any Adam West fan) sit alongside popular SNL favorites like Adam Sandler's "Canteen Boy and Scoutmaster." Peppered among the pages are classics from F. Scott Fitzgerald, Amy Bloom, Nora Ephron, and Paul Feig for those looking for some "older" works of comedy.

There are quite a few funny selections, but almost as many more that aren't funny. So often I would get half way through a selection, thinking there's nothing funny yet, it must be about to get funny. Three-quarters of the way through, still not smiling, I would think well there must be a really good punchline. Finished: no punchline, no redeeming value. Maybe Apatow thinks it funny that people would buy a book just because Judd Apatow says it's funny. I guess a sense of humor in film does not necessarily translate to a sense of humor in literature.

If you are a huge fan, like myself, of Judd Apatow you will appreciate this book. One disappointing thing is that he states out-right that his interns did most of the reading and compiling and he just sorted through the good stuff to include. However, it is well worth the money since all proceeds go to charity!

I realize humor is subjective, but not one of these stories made me really laugh. The best ones were interesting. The worst ones were depressing. And a few were just too crass to read.

Got it for my nephew. I've heard him laughing so that's a good sign. Who couldn't use a good laugh these days?

unless a person thinks it is funny to pull wings off a fly this book is not funny at all. Could argue it is reasonably interesting, but definitely not funny. Check out a copy in a bookstore---look at the cartoons chosen, and if you find those funny---aw don't waste you time, just get some Rodney Dangerfield---he has a better sense of timing, and I might add an also unwholesome view of what is funny. Must admit in the first 120 pages I didn't smile but then again I laugh at the creativity in "The Wacky World of Tex Avery" and some Abbott anmd Costello and News Radio, 3rd Rock, 30 Rock, and even Timothy the Tooth.
